Heated Steering Wheel - 981

Hi - I own a 981 Spyder 2015 (late) Does anyone know if there are any options to retrofit a heated steering wheel to this model? I know gloves are an option, which I will look into. Thank you.
 
I think it's possible maybe a new wheel and fitting kit obviously needs to be coded as well after fitting.
Gloves might be a cheaper option. [:D]
 
Don’t know if the spyder has a different wheel. But there Was a heated wheel option for 981 and 991.


I retrofitted a 991 heated wheel to my 987.2. Needed (in my case) a replacement clock spring mechanism since mine did not have the correct connections for the heater and it needed coding to activate it.


don’t know what needs to be done on be 981 but I do know that sone options that were just an activation on the 987 started to require a code to be input as well )

It seems to me that regardless of spec all cars have the same wiring harness, which would make sense from a cost perspective, so if you can get hold of a heated wheel then as said it’s just a matter of fitting it and getting it coded, which will require either a PIWIS or equivalent analyser.

Malarcy- I’d be interested in what you needed to do to change the clock spring over? Was it complicated? I think the clockspring is the part that all column stalks attach to? Which clockspring did you swap to? Any further info gratefully received. Thx

The clock spring it the connector that sits between the steering column and the wheel - it carries the connections for all the steering wheel wiring and copes with the rotation of the wheel by having a coil of wire housed in in - hence "clock spring". Its not the bit the stalks bolt to its the bit the wires from the steering wheel , and the car harness connect to On the 987.2 there are two flavours of clock spring - one that carries the heated wheel connectors, one that doesn't, it also carries the steering wheel angle sensor (used for stability control) - so you have to be careful when swapping - or have access to the piwis diags to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor.

earlier 987's also needed an updated steering column electronic module - since they didn't have the heated wheel stuff - but I think from 2010 onwards that was universal.

The new clock spring was about £90 from OPC.

All the connectors from the 991 wheel fitted ( internals were identical ) - and it was then a case of coding the car to let it know the wheel was there. I actually did the swap for the multi function buttons - the fact that was heated was a bonus ( I sourced it from ebay from someone who had swapped to paddle shift for the pdk)

The Airbag on was the same ( the 987.2 had the round aitbag - same as 981/991) - only difference from a 987 heated wheel was the heating button was on the back of the spoke on the (991) wheel rather than the side ( 987 ) .

All of which is little use for the 981 - since the clock spring is likely different, and you may not need to change it anyway - but coding may be harder because some 981 functions require a VIN specific code to be input as part of the activations.
