heater been crappy

1 - my heat puts out no heat apart from when it's right on the red. is this normal, or do i have faulty cabin temperature sensors?

2 - my heater alternates been either blowing out hot or cold air when it's on the red. am i likely to have a loose connction somewhere (the heater fan works fine).

i'm aware it's minus a million outside, but when it blew out hot it made the cabin scorchio.

ta. :)

More likely to be outside temp sensor. They go short circuit so the heater ECU thinks it's actually plus a million degrees outside. Disconnect it and it will think it is then minus a million degrees and try to compensate by giving you good heat. Give it a try it worked for me.

It is under the bonnet to the left of the blower motor. Little probe type thing with 2 pin plug connected pointing forwards.

The other culprit is the interior temp sensor which gets it's reading from the little round vent in the dash next to the clock. It has a rubber tube going to it which can get clogged up as well as the sensor itself. It's a little fan which constantly draws in air to the sensor with ignition on. It's only held on by two nuts and maybe a tie wrap for the tube.

Won't do any harm to clean that up and try unplugging the outside temp one but do them one at a time to see the effect each has.

Front left of the cowling in the scuttle to the right of the vacuum resevoir. If you lift up the cowling you will see it supported by a bracket in the intake path of the heater blower. It's just one suggestion but worked for me. I actually diagnosed mine from the workshop manual. Took me straight to it. Is yours oval or square dash? Not familiar with the heater set up of square dash lol just presumed it was oval.

In fact Stuart I think it may have been you that gave me the idea of unplugging it. Funny how you don't think of the simplest things sometimes. Oh and by the way Dave the cheapest I could get a quote for one was about £30 from Frazer Part for what is essentially a 10p NTC thermistor. No disrespect meant to Max Schenker on that one. I guess that's price he gets them for. Max doesn't rip people off. Not his style.

I don't think the part changed form square/oval dash. It differs for A/C to non A/C though.

Yep, I unplugged mine to similar effect a while back.

cheers lads, i'll do it when it's a nice warm +1 degree though.

i'm only doing two 2miles drives at the moment, so it won't warm up anyway.
