Heater Blower Problems

Taking my car over to have the front hub assemblies changed and suspension aligned (again []) my heater fan control decided to give up the ghost.

It does full pelt (on four) but nothing else. The quick demist switch also still functions.

Is this a dead heater control unit (gulp) or does anyone else know of any other possible causes/remidies?

I look forward to your comments.

I think this is covered in the titanic faqs - IIRC there is a resistor pack on the blower unit passenger side under the plastic cover 1 or 2 screws holding it in, don't know if it can be persuaded back to life with contact cleaner or if its a replacement job,
Tony

I had exactly the same thing just before christmas, and managed to get mine working again fine.

Lift the plastic shroud over the heater blower in the engine compartment, and on top there is a resistor, held on with two cross head screws. Everywhere I read up on it about said it was white, but mine was black[&:]

It's about an inch wide and 3 inches long. when you get it out it looks like 3 sets of coils, small medium and large. They would have had some sort of ceramic protection but a lot of mine had flaked off. There is a small thermo contact switch between the coils and the conector, and mine had corroded, I think it is to shut the fans off if the resistor gets too hot. A bit of a rub with some wet and dry, clean all the contacts and make sure the switch held properly and it's been fine ever since[:D]

Thanks for your comments chaps, I found the FAQ on Titanic and have faxed it to them as whats sortin in out - I'm not dodging the column I just haven't got time to do it myself [&o]

Found the thread. Thanks richthomas.
Had a look at it, gave it a scrub but still nothing.
May need replacing.[:(]

Mine has four coils, I think I'm right in thinking mine is a climate control set-up?

Hmmm, mines got climate control too, but looked a bit different, at least yours is white like everywhere said it was! Mine had a small thermo contact switch along part of the copper circuit, just a small contact that would open if it got hot, and I think it was cleaning that up that sorted it out as it was a bit cruddy like in your photo.

Are "climate control" and "air con" the same thing (M573) ?
My car has the air con and the thing is black, the coil is in one piece but has several sections with different diameters ...

Climate control and Air Con are different, air con has a compressor and a resevior of refrigerant to keep the fans blowing cold whatever the ambient temp outside, whereas climate control only (is supposed to[:D]) keeps the temperature regulated to what you set it to at the dial, but can't blow colder than the air entering from outside. The heater control looks the same though as far as I know, albeit without the A/C button. Non climate control cars have a colour range from blue to red on the dial, climate and air con cars have temp numbers. Looks like your resistor is the same as mine though[8D].

Wouldn't you know it [] my blue Turbo has started doing this now [:D]. I better get it cleaned up and fixed before Le Mans next week

Purchased replacement from Porsch-Apart £20. Hopefully, I pop it in and 'hey presto' it works!
I think there's something in what you say richthomas, have you seen the film 'The Ring'?
I'm scared!!!

Only ordered part at 2pm Friday, came in the post this morning (Sat.) How's that for a quick turn round, and a big thumbs[:D] up to Porsch-Apart for sending it out straight away and not sitting on the order.
Popped it in and 'hey presto' it works.
Should of warned Porsch-Apart they might have a rush on for resistors!
Have I broken 'The Ring...?'[]

Now, I can get back to the sunroof problem!
(Don't read that thread if your sunroof is working fine, as I cannot be held responsible for what happens 24hrs after you have read the thread!)[:(]

Drat [] Cleaned mine up and it made no difference. Looks like I better contact Porschapart in the morning.

I wish I'd looked at this earlier while they were still open [:D]

You can always borrow mine over the forthcoming weekend if it doesn't arrive in time. I wouldn't want the occupants of your car cooking in the French sunshine [:D]

OOh good idea [:D], hopefully Porschapart will be as quick with me as they were with Darren, but you never know

[:-] (I had been thinking of temporarily swapping the one from Debbies S2 )

Good news [:D] Porschapart are couriering me one to get here tomorrow morning (£5 extra)

I tried my local OPC as they are only 8 miles away and it would be convenient to fit it today. £138 plus a 2 week delivery from Germany - er no thanks

EEk, that's just stupid, how do they get away with charging so much just for one of those?? I know porsche parts aren't cheap but they can't say there's more R+D in a resistor.

anyone else who needs one had better get in quick. One is winging its way to me as we speak! Great service from porsch-apart.
So hopefully my heater will now work on all settings, even if it does only blow out cold air (yes I know they normally fail to hot, but my car likes to be a little different [:-])

Steve

Received mine at 08:45 this morning - great service from PorschApart.

It's fitted and working, but it's not very hot here today so I can't tell if it's ok when it gets warm [&:]
