Heater blower thing

Anybody ever encountered this? The heater/cold air blower on the dash of my 'C' reg 944 Lux doesn't seem to want to work. That is, it does from time to time but only when it feels like it (ie. not when I actually need it to demist the windscreen or run the aircon) and then only for a minute before cutting out again. So I know that the motor still works - even if only occasionally. Maybe it's just a relay? Any thoughts before the next misty day would be appreciated..

Square or oval dash?

Assuming the latter it doesn't even work on 4? What about if you press the demist button?

Hi - it's the oval dash version. Interestingly, the first few times it threw a wobbly, it would only work on 4 but now, not on anything. I also tried the de-mister button but that doesn't kick it into life, either. I'm leaving the selector permanently on 4 just in case it suddenly re-awakens but, apart from a few seconds burst from it last week, that seems to be it.

Remember a post a little while ago that the resistor pack - under the bonnet then under the Heater blower Guard - connections beacme unreliable. Taking the pack off and then replacing / cleaning the connections cured the problem - might be worth a try?

Thanks a lot - it does sound very 'resistor-pack-ish' to me.. I'll try it the next chance I get and let you know if it did the trick.

Well...just took the resistor pack apart and the connections seem fine. Also checked the relay connections and they're pretty much pristine. Apart from a few tantalising two second bursts from the fan this afternoon, still nothing, though. Any ideas?

When you pulled the resistor pack did you clean up the contacts? I'm not sure how by a visual inspection you can tell if a resistor is working correctly. My car has had a few intermittent issues with the heating system, firstly when you switched on the windscreen demister it didn't want to switch off again, which seems to have sorted itself out on it's own with use (must have been a sticky switch), and i've also had the only works on speed 4 thing which I believe is a classic sign of a resistor pack issue. Some have reported to have cured this by replacing the resistor pack with a 2nd hand unit for about £10 (they are about £140 new!!) and others have replaired by cleaning up the contacts and refitting the original.

I checked the contacts and there's no sign of corrosion at all. The only thing I did notice was that one of the filaments at the 'small' end of the resistor itself has come adrift but I put it back in contact with the copper terminal - still no result, though.. Perhaps the resistor itself is shot? If so, does anyone know where to get hold of a used one for an '86 oval dash model? The only ones I've managed to find on e-Bay just don't look the same as mine ie. a black connector on top of a flat white carrier and not cylindrical, as they mostly seem to be.

Mine threw a wobbly again earlier today. Rang up PH Sportscars and i'll be picking one up this Friday. It was explained to me that the reason why only position 4 works when this pack goes is because on position 4 the fan is seeing the full 12v whereas on other speeds the current flows through the resistor pack to control the fan speed.

The first thing I knew was my rear window started to steam up as the fan is always on even when your speed control is on zero. So I ran it on position 4 for 30 seconds or so and low and behold the other three postions started working.
