Heater fan speed

My heater fan won't work on the first speed (slow). I took the switch out, stripped it down and cleaned up the terminals and it worked for all of two hours. So I obtained a second hand switch but still have the same problem. I have studied the hayes wiring diagram without success, If I short out a live to the first speed behind the switch it works so it seems to go though the resistor pack ok.
Anyone come across this before or has any bright ideas I would welcome the input.
