Heater in cabin

Why is the footwell giving off loads of heat on the drivers side yet nothing in the passenger footwell, no matter what I do with the controls nothing seems to change. It's so hot my key fob is too hot to touch! I know there were a few quirks with the 964 but is there anything I can do, I'm off to France in May and don't really fancy being cooked alive!
PS Was it any of you North bound on the M5 on Sunday late morning in a clean looking black 964?[:D]

The heating system is various tubes clamped together underneath the footwells/dashboard they are prone to work lose or break where the clamp joins are. Yours sounds like this as its in your footwells and your controls had no effect.

So its usually a case of tracing where the draft' coming from and finding what's worked lose usually by lifting carpets, maybe unscrewing the odd panel to find the source and then reclamping or doing a trim on the errant pipe and stretching it a bit and reclamping.

Graham,

As Gordon has already said, there are various components which can give trouble, but your description sounds to me to be the classic "paper pipe" problem. If you take off the footwell side trim you will see - probably, the remnains of - a paper/cardboard pipe approximately 3 inches in diameter, secured at each end by a jubilee clip of same diameter. These tubes have a habit of destroyiong themselves over time and will leak out HOT air in some incredible volume to cook your feet and legs along with anything else in the way!!!

The parts are quite cheap (even from an OPC) - about £8 each side from memory - but fitting them is another story. Because of the cramped space it's very difficult to get in there at attach the tubes. They are only JUST long enough - each side has a different part number BTW - and it's a real PITA to get them fitted. I bought two new ones for my car and had so much trouble doing the one which was really destroyed that I gave up the idea of doing the other one until it got REALLY bad.

Hope that helps - and good luck with the repair.

Regards

Dave

Thanks all for your help, will do some more investigation work now! Who is this Jane off airport program? I don't watch it, but it's not the first time I've had this question![:)]
