Heater Motors

Just had my heater motor disconected by my specialist as the bearing are going and it was making a God awful noise. They recommended that while it's cold this is fine but that i should replace this when it gets warmer as it also helps cool the engine ( plus with no heater the cabin is pretty cold for the first half hour.

I understand that you cannot get to the bearing and have to replace the whole unit and the OPC price is around £400 - anyone know where else i could get this part ?

Graham,

Bert Gear at Berlyn Services does them for around £150 I believe. Apparently the 964 motor has been updated and only the 993 motor is available which requires some small changes to the mounting in order to fit. I'm sure bert can give you the low down.

Web site is http://partsforporsche.co.uk and his e-mail is bert@berlyn-services.co.uk

Graham,

Yep, you'll need to buy the whole rear blower unit, which is now a 993 part. The only difference is the length of the mounting bushes. Once you've got the new blower, you'll need to open it up & switch the bushes on the new one with the 964 one you've got fitted already. Took me about half and hour to fit and if I can do this, anyone can!!

Nope, I bought mine from Type911. I also got a new heater resistor from them too. Check that your resistor has a part number ending with 02. If not, you need to change it over. - it was updated due to a fire risk!

where abouts is the heater resistor as this was a recall but porsche think not and id like to change my dont want to see my 911 go up in flames

Sajjad,

The ballast resistor is located in the plastic plumbing which runs from the blower to the heat exchanger. It's tucked away on the left hand side close to the left hand electrical panel. The only clue it's there are the two wires that attach to it. The resistor itself is a snap fit in the plumbing tube and it can be a bit tricky getting it out and back in.

You'll find that if you take off the cover to the electrical panel there is much more room to get your hand to the resistor.

Now that i have finally got round to replacing the heater motor, i have found a company that supply just the motor ( without all the plastic shrouding etc ) for just £100. A bit of a saving on the £220 plus i had been quoted.

Has anyone taken one of these babies apart and refitted a new motor before ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Not (yet) had a need to replace the heater motor so, sorry, but I can't help there. Did you ask the motor supplier?

Be interested to know who the supplier is...

Regards

Bob

I found it on this web site.

http://www.type-911.co.uk/gp_electrical.htm

I called the guy and he said it was not a big job, maybe an hour or so but didn't have any instructions on hwo to do it.
