Heater problem

I would like some help/information on the fault I have with the heater system in my 964 Targa 2.

The fan operates well on all settings through 1 to 4 when the temperature is set to minimum (no air conditioning is fitted on this vehicle). As soon as I turn up the temperature from minimum the fan stops working. The fans then come on intermittently for 3 seconds then goes off at any temperature setting unless returned to minimum.

The driver's side foot well gets very hot but not from the heater, whilst the passenger foot well remains cool.

I would appreciate any help and advice on this problem as whilst I can cope in the summer now that winter is approaching the heating issue is a problem as I cannot demist the windscreen using the heater demist facility.

Thanking you all in anticipation.

Your first symptom is a classic case of the fuse in the engine bay fuse box, having blown. Check that first as it is an easy fix. You may even find that there is blown 25 amp fuse in there - this should be changed to a 30 amp fuse as per Porsche's technical bulletin.

Your second symptom is of a hole in the heater hose in the footwell. This links the rear of the car to the heating assembly at the front and is made of cardboard. You'll need to pull back the carpet trim to inspect it.

Steven,

The problem is caused by the lack of boost from the rear blower. This phenomenon is always seen when the rear blower fails however, in your case I'd guess that the air is escaping from a hole in the ducting in the driver's footwell (a very common problem) giving rise to the uncontrollable heat in the driver's footwell.

You'll need to remove the carpet covering the side of the footwell and you will see a corrugated tube (I suspect, with a big hole in it). That is what needs to be replaced - about a tenner from your OPC. Pig of a job to do but relatively cheap.

Regards

Dave
