HEATER REMOVAL

Having removed the air injection system plumbing from under the engine I note that it follows up into the engine bay and into the pump etc that is driven by a pulley on the centre fan. Can all this system be removed?
I know that the electric fan part in the rear of the engine bay is disconnected as it runs all the time as my electronic system is U S and makes an awful noise.
Is this all for heating because the two lever operated heater control boxes are very effective at putting heat into the cabin, even with the heat exchangers in a poor state (which I am replacing).
Have any of you removed all this system (which I note weighs a bit as well) and have any problems occurred.

I hope this all makes sense!!

Nick, yes this can all be remove without damaging the engine. Be sure to replace the injectors with speciasl block off plugs avaiable seperatly or alternativly cut and weld closed the heads of the existing injectors

Thanks Bruce, have you done this with yours and do you find the heater boxes from the heat exchangers are adequate enough (note I dont use it in the winter but still go out in the cold)?

Hi Nick,
I removed the air pump and all of its pipework some time ago, it certainly clear up the upper and lower sides of the engine. Make sure that you Loctite the blanking plugs in place, you do not want them coming loose. You can deal with the holes left in the sheet metal engine surround in a number of ways: leave the holes, weld them up, screw/rivet blanking plates in place or fit a new piece from a different model year. You can remove the electric fan and its trunking and just rely on the main engine fan to force enough warm air through the heat exchangers and into the car. This apparently works well as long as the car is moving. You will need a couple of pieces of metal trunking from a pre-74 911 to complete the job. This mini-project is generally know as backdating the heating system, do a search on this site or on Pelican Parts.
Good luck
Ian

If you don't need it take the whole lot out Nick. The heater/blower motor was added mid seventies to create hot air for the screen and the driver on cold morning starts, basically whilst stationery, it is automatically switched on when the driver turns the auto-heat control above 'off' or pulls the heater valve control lever/levers. Remove the heater/blower motor and you will still get lots of hot air providing the HEs and the heater valves are ok and working but only effectively on the move. Saves weight and makes the engine bay more accessible, here's a pic of mine after completing the job.

Pete, How many heater pipes do you have coming off your heat exchangers into the engine bay/cabin?
There are four coming off mine and it looks as though I need to make two redundant if I remove the heater system and just rely on the heater control boxes, can you get blanks to close off the ends of the exchangers?

There are two pipes one for each exchanger same as all 911s I presume. You can blank off the pipes with some sort of home made cap but the best way of installing this system is to buy the older style ducting for the engine bay and use the power of the engines fan to force the hot air from the exchangers into the cabin.

I've just realised what you meant by four connections to the HEs I wrongly assumed you meant four conections to the engine bay but you mean two to the engine bay and two to the cockpit via the heater/flapper valves. Sorry for the confusion there the heater/blower motor covers the tickover to 2000rpm rev range above that the engine fan pushes the cold air over the HEs and into the cockpit, so if you won't miss the hot air on start up I'd say remove the system if you are keeping the car.

Bones

the back date looks great, I have lost count of the times I have had to remove the blower motor and pipework for access, I also just read my last post, Oh dear I must remember to hit the spell check!

Thanks a lot chaps, I am planning on keeping the car for a good few years so I am going to strip the system out and just use the heater/flappy boxes for the heat.

Cheers
