Heater valves control cable

Hello, I have the common 'can't switch the heat off' problem. I have eased the flap valves and they operate ok'ish but don't close completely. It seems there is a little tension in the cable preventing the spring from fully closing the valve. I am hoping to adjust them but suspect the cable on rhs is too short. My question - is it a diy job to install a new cable? Thank you Tim

It has been a long time since I played with one of these!
If the cables are still in tension and preventing the springs from pulling the valves to the "dump heat to under the car" position then the control unit between the seats is likely to be the problem. I suggest you adjust the heat settings up and down and listen carefully to the control module whether you can hear the servo motor whirring. Logically I can't see how the cables could have got shorter. To be clear the holes in the valves are open to atmosphere for cold and closed for hot.

Hello
It is my understanding that there is just one cable that controls both heater valves and loops around/through the heater control between the seats. In theory if the cable is too short on one side you can disconnect both heater valves and feed the cable from one side to the other. I cannot confirm this with first hand experience and I cannot find the part on the 911 Carrera 3.2 parts catalog but have been advised that this is the solution. A friend who also has a 3.2 purchased a new cable from Porsche and that was how it was supplied.
The valves on my car were always sticking and hot air would be coming through all the time. I have just had a new clutch fitted so I got PCT Coventry to remove the heater valves while the engine and geargox were out so that the retaining nuts were easily undone. When I got the car home I removed both heater boxes and cleaned up the valve spindles and made sure that both worked properly. For the first time in the 12 years I have owned my car the system works properly to the extent that I have to turn down the incoming fresh air and turn up the heating because the car can get too cold. Previously the car was always too hot. Job done.
Good luck with the cable.

Geoff, the servo works OK and operates the flap valves but not to the fully open (cold) position. I have since found a section of the Porsche manual that describes how to adjust the cables, providing I can undo the bolts that connects the cable to the valves I should be able to adjust it! Thanks for your reply. Tim
