Heating Air Con Problems

BKE has a little problem with his heating and air con:-

Pushing the air con button blows a fuse! This fuse also seems to control the heating and air direction baffles. This is a bit of a pain as, whilst one can currently live without air con, heating is becomming a favouable option.

I can stop myself pushing the air con button, and things are fine, untill I push the windscreen quick clear button when the fuse blows again. I'm on my last 7.5 amp fuse so haven't tried the recirculating air button yet.

In normal Porsche complexity the fan is on a different fuse.

Question: Does the windscreen quick clear switch also turn on the air con to dry the air?

If the answer to this is yes I can look at the air con as having the electrical fault. If the answer is no it then could be the control module.

John, according to my owners manual it states that when you press the rapid defrost button

'the system is automatically set to maximum heating power, blower speed 4,and the entire airflow is directed to the windscreen and side vents'

There is no mention of aircon being activated

Is your rear-screen heater working properly John? It is not documented in any of the literature I have, but the rear heater runs off the same fuse as well on at least some Turbos. Corrosion of the contacts back there can cause this problem, and you can put any size fuse up front and it will still blow. Another possibility is a dodgy earth (either permanently connected or permanently disconnected when it shouldn't be), and the prime locations for this are between the compressor and the fuse-box or coming off the cabin temperature sensor - I've also known this problem happen because of some dodgy/deteriorated wiring from a third-party immobiliser installation.
