Heavy Clutch?

Hi,

I have recently purchsed a 997 C2 ( Sept 05, 20k). The car is fine except that I find the clutch to be very heavy, Is this normal ??.

Don

Hi Don
Congrats on the purchase, hope you get as much fun out of your car as I have from mine over the past eight months or so.
With regard to your clutch I've never thought of mine as heavy so I'd have it checked out, although I did sit in a GT3 RS and the new GT2 at the recent Leeds OPC launch and the clutch in those felt noticeably heavier than in my C2S so I suspect it depends greatly on what you're used to.
Not trying to divert the thread but whilst on the subject can anyone comment on the similarity between the C2S short shift option and that fitted in the GT3 RS/GT2 as I would seriuosly be considering one if it feels anywhere near as good - very snicky indeed!!
GT2 was in white looked the business, sorry no pics as forgot my camera doh!

Hi Don
Congrats on your purchase, and I wish you many happy moments through the twisties[:D]!
As Mick mentioned, it's all very relative I'm afraid - if your last car had a lighter clutch it will naturally seem heavier. I would not say the clutch is particularly heavy, so might be worth having it inspected in case it is beginning to fail.
Best way before inspections etc would be to compare with another C2S if you have access to one (maybe via an OPC). Mine is heavier than my Boxster S was, but I don't notice it now even in stop start town driving.
I'm sure you'll adapt to it very easily.

Hi , well done on the purchase. The clutch on my 06 c4s is heavy, if I do a lot of city driving my left toes go numb! On the open road though there is great feel.

To Mickshep the short shifter is tremendous, an absolute must, as advised drive both and feel the difference.Best option I specked for overall driving pleasure.

The short shift is great, It took me a while to be convinced though, after a few 1000 miles though it does feel right for the car, although it should be pointed out it can feel stiff and notchy first thing when the car is cold.

Short shift - is great, definatley the way to go. A bit stiff when cold but fabulous when warmed up

Yes Rob, maybe thats the best idea. I will turn up at the local regional meeting and see if I can compare the clutch padal on another C2 if there is one. If it,s the same as mine I'll have to sign up at the gym!.

3.6L Carrera clutch should be much lighter than 3.8L Carrera S clutch. If you just have a Carrera then I suggest you ask your OPC to have a look.

One thing I am really looking forward to for the new Turbo (3.6L) is not having a aching right leg after 10mins or so in crawling traffic.

i have a 997s thats done 15k miles and the thing i notice is that for the first few miles when i get in the car its not exactly what u would call "smooth" when i change from 1st to 2nd...its all a bit of a crunch when i change. the opc told me "yeah, thay all do that"...any similar experiences chaps?

My old C2S Cab was only a little stiff from 1st to 2nd when cold, even with a short shifter.

Putting it into 1st whilst going more than 0mph was a different story, very stiff indeed, just have to go straight to 2nd gear if doing 1mph.

its fine once i have done a few miles and the mechanical parts are under warranty so i guess i shud just relax. ive only had the car 3 months and they reapired a few things i wasnt happy with when i got it with no hassles. i discovered after 2 weeks of having the car that the suspension bushes had all worn away creating a creaking noise when the car went over any minor bumps in the road. they picked up the bill when i got it checked which was £850! a new gearbox wud be a different story i would have thought though

I have a C2S on a 05 plate 11k miles and don't find the clutch stiff at all........I'm only 5'1'' and 8 stone, so if your finding it that hard, I'd have it checked or you definitely need to go to the gym[:D]!

Yes, the changing into first gear is a bit of a pain for the first 5 mins. That is normal I've been told.

first gear is fine on mine its going from 1st to 2nd when its cold...its not so much hard to engage and the clutch is fine its just it "crunches" into gear when its cold and only happens in 2nd gear...still, i love the car!!!!!!
