Heavy rain causes damp footwell

Hi,

Can anyone help, my car has to live outside in all weathers and when there is a lot of water on the roads after about 5 miles the car starts to play up. It kangaroos from 2000-3500rpm, after this its fine. It only happens when its been raining heavy and I found the passenger footwell is wet under the carpet. Once it has dried out the car is fine but this takes about week. With the bad weather coming in this could last a while.
Any ideas where the rain could be getting in?

Normally it's blocked drain holes either in the sunroof channels or the scuttle area. Check the scuttle first as it easier - there is a hole that goes under a seam toward either outer end of the scuttle and should lead out under the back of the wheelarch that can easily get blocked with debris like leave etc. If that is blocked then the water will pool and if it rises above the lip the fuse box sits on it could leak through into the footwell below.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]For the sunroof there is a drain in each corner. They can be tested by carefully running water into the channel. Again they discharge into the wheelarches and if blocked they can be carefully cleared out with a soft wire such as strimmer wire.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

My windscreen leaks in really heavy rain - thankyou autoglass

Rear side windows can also leak around the seals

How's the seal on your fusebox cover? Is the heater pipe seal leaking? check the firewall for any warping. It can be caused by jacking up the car in funny spots and deforming the shell. That *may* lead to a split seam on the firewall that need straightening and re-sealing.

I think if I were you, i'd find some way of mounting the DME under the glovebox for the time being ( i know it's not pretty, but having it swimming a few times a week is most certainly not doing a VERY expensive box any good. After that, pull up the footwell carpet, and see if you can lay some paper on there or something to give you an indication of where it's coming from.

Hi all, I ive been away since I sent this question.

The seal on the fuse box cover is good and no water is getting through there.
I have pulled up the carpet and thrown away the sound insulation and left this open while I'm driving, so far no water to be seen.
The weep holes are all good and clean.
Tony, you say your windscreen leaks in heavy rain, is it visible?
I will check the heater pipe for leaks, where is the fire wall.

While I have the footwell exposed I have sprayed waxoyl to all visible joints.

Iwill keep you posted.

Thanks Steve

Yes it leaks at the top so it drips on the passenger. Strangely though it seems to have stopped so far this year (I have tried sealing it every summer). A good squirt with a jetwash while someone sits inside will usually find the leaks.
