Hello All, New 944 owner, 1st questions!

Hi,
I have just delved into the world of Porsche ownership having finally found something to replace my Alfa Romeos. I picked up a 944 2.7 in slate grey for just over £1800, the guy seemed gutted to have to get rid of it (pregnant Mrs), however he didnt put a reserve price up when sold on ebay so I'm thinking that he may have got alot more for it if he had the time to sell it privately. I am already amazed at how well screwed together my new car is compared my old GTV! Amazingly, all the electrics work, there are no leaks anywhere to speak of, no wear on any of the seats and the engine pulls really well, my last three cars were Italian so this is big news to me! Just got a few questions before I go about making the car perfect for me.
  1. There are a few very small spots of surface rust in the corner of the sills on the drivers side. Ive taken the vent off and had a look down and it doesn't appear to be too bad. Tiny bit near the boot lock aswell. Does anyone have rough estimate of how much money I would be looking at just for a general tidy up? I would have a go at it myself but id rather have a professional do it if its affordable.
  2. The radio does not function as a radio currently, only an ipod player. I have read somewhere on here that once Ive bought an adaptor (ISO - DIN I think), I need to power the aerial somehow in order to get a half decent reception. How do I go about this?
  3. The engine is a bit "juddery" when started from cold, then is fine once it warms up. I'm passing this off as the fact that it's a 20 year old car at the moment, however is there something more sinister to it?
  4. Ive noticed that the engine whines a little, any ideas what could cause this? All belts and tensioners were done last April, I'm thinking that maybe the timing belt is on too tight? I cant find the sodding thing though!
Other than these points, the car is perfect. It has 17" 993 alloys on it (which look good but I feel EVERY bump), a much smaller Porsche steering wheel, good clutch, gearbox, brakes etc. For £1800 I dont think I could have asked for more, and think I was lucky to find that ebay auction with no reserve on it! More than pleased with my 1st week of Porsche ownership, might even be able to take the sunroof off this weekend if it stays sunny!

Sorry for the essay, any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Iain

The areial is located in the windscreen and is amplified - make sure you have a supply going to the amplifier (often missed with a replacement headunit) or you'll get no reception.

The juddery part (assuming you don't mean juddering from the driveline / clutch) could be a sticky ISV as this is quite common.

The timing and balance belts are located right at the front of the engine covered by a plastic cover. You need to remove several M5 allen bolts to get access. If it's belt noise you can hear I would say the alternator belt is a more likely culprit.

Congratulations Iain and welcome to the fold. Your bodywork should not be too expensive as long as you catch it early. New cills are expensive but hopefully it won't come to that. The aerial amp will need power, if you have little or no radio reception it is likely that the amp power is nt connected. A good service may sort out your engine judder, new plugs, dizzy cap etc. As for your belts, were the belts re-tensioned after 1000 miles? they should have been so worth checking. A good independant can do that for you, They should be checked when cold. You will find both the balancer and cam belt under the black plastic cover at the front of the engine.

Enjoy your car, they are great fun. They won't provide the highs that the Alfa could, but they don't give the lows either.
