Hello and a few q's!

Hi all,

I'm currently considering a 911 (probably an early 993), after owning a few BMW's, as they would appear to tick most of my boxes. (small, light, nimble, sexy, 2+2, daily driveable, trackable, low depreciation etc etc). Plus I've always fancied a 911, especially the 993.

I've looked through the FAQ's and Buying Section, but have a couple of other q's, if you'd be so kind:

1. Clutch - how much to replace on these? And when is typical? (obv. depends on driving style)
2. Any major engine work required at 100k or similar? (timing chains etc?)
3. Is running 18's on an early one likely to harm it? (i.e. without that brace fitted)
4. Any serious mechanical flaws? Didn't really read about anything major engine/transmission wise (e.g. like oil leaks on the 996)
5. Rev limit - what do the nonVarioRams rev to?! Do they enjoy it above peak power? (6100rpm I believe)

Hi - here is my experience:-

1. My clutch and RMS changed by OPC in 2005 -- £1860 Indies do it cheaper

2. Mine's done 162,000 miles now and as far as I can tell the engine has never been opened. Goes very well and doesn't use oil. Some wear their valve guides and some leak oil from rocker covers others are ok.

3. Mine on 17" and I wouldn't go to 18's despite they look great.

4. The youngest are 10 years old now but they do seem reliable provided oil is changed regularily and not driven like a lunatic when cold.

5. I think my red line is 6,750 but I am ashamed to say I rarely get above 5,000 rpm as they pull so well at lower revs. They do sound great when given some beans though.

Make sure you go for a decent test drive as they are not to everyones taste. If you then decide it's for you I am sure you will enjoy every mile behind the wheel.

my view here is about £600 including labour through an indi--40 - 60k miles
2. Any major engine work required at 100k or similar? (timing chains etc?)
not that I'm aware of
3. Is running 18's on an early one likely to harm it? (i.e. without that brace fitted)
my experience of running 17's and 18 is that the rise quality seriously deteriotes with the 18's though they look alot better and perform better on the track
4. Any serious mechanical flaws? Didn't really read about anything major engine/transmission wise (e.g. like oil leaks on the 996)
early 993's had a wiring loom problem which should have been done under warranty--need to check that this has been done--there are potential rust problems around the front screen--need to look for
5. Rev limit - what do the nonVarioRams rev to?! Do they enjoy it above peak power? (6100rpm I believe)
having owned both the major advantage of the varioram is the possibility of having torque below 4500---my non varioram car really only felt happy in the 4500 - 6500 powerband--in comparison to the varioram car.

John - I thought that the RMS issue was more of a 996 thing, it can affect 993's as well then?

Apologies but I'm a bit of a one for looking at the numbers, a 993 is about 1400kg unladen then? And 0-100mph about 12.5 sound correct-ish?
(just comparing to previous/current vehicles, and potential alternatives)
 
Yes, the RMS can cause problems in a 993 but usually not a big leak and it is routine to ask for this to be done when changing the clutch as a precaution.

Don't know the 0-100 time but even my old girl gets there in a blink of an eye it seems.

My wife has an Audi TT 225 BHP which feels quick in general driving but it doesn't have anywhere near the seemingly endless shove my 993 has.

993's are quite thrilling to drive and now good value for such a quality product. (Biased or what !!)

Take care in the wet if test driving tomorrow !!
 
Only data point I'd add is that clutch is very driving dependant - my car spent it's first 6 years with a woman owner in London - clutch needed changing at 30K [&:] (3K into my ownship - cost me 800 at an indy inc VAT)
 
there are potential rust problems around the front screen--need to look for

Also potential rust problems around bottom corners of rear screen, too (have a little look under the rubber in the corners - it's a bit of a water trap) and if screen's been out and not replaced with care[;)].
 
Worth checking dampers too. Original Monroe's don't last well. Made a huge difference when I got some new Bilstein's fitted [:D]
