Hello from a first timer.

Well hello :)

i'm Richard, new member to the PCGB and finally got hold of my first new (old) porsche..

its a red 3.2 22k on the clock and original spec apart from the stereo which has a new single Din style Porsche touch screen radio. maybe a sin.. if i can find an original working radio for it ill put that in but it will do for the moment.

anyways... reason im here posting is the dial with the fuel and oil display.. the oil display seems to just stay at the bottom. car drives great, no problems.. temp warms up ok and stays in the middle etc.. but that oil dial just stays at the bottom

when your going along if you let off the accelerator it moves up a little but doesn't go out the red bit..

any advice on this at all?

22k? Just run in!

The oil level gauge should only be used when the engine is up to temperature, at idle, and on level ground. The rest of the time it is an ornament. Use the dipstick to get a reliable reading, as shown in the manual.

Hi, agree with above , remember when checking oil level with dipstick engine must be running!! Use the gauge only as a guide, will only register when warmed up and will fluctuate with accel/decell. Use the dipstick to ensure level is correct

hmm right but when its warm that dial should at least move beyond the bottom...? the dip stick reads fine...

 
When moving, the gauge will be fluctuating all over the place depending on temperature, revs, oil level, oil grade and the colour of your socks (probably not the last variable, but you get my drift)...It is only of ANY (albeit limited) use when warm. You MUST check the level with the dipstick in accordance with the manual.

Your car looks stunning, but if you are really concerned about your oil level, I'll swap cars with you - my gauge works perfectly!

One thing - if your needle isn't moving off the stop at all, you can adjust the sender to correspond (approximately) with the actual level. Still only a rough guide though.
 
ok well when i next take it out ill warm it up and see what happens.. maybe its just me having OCD... if something doesn't move or do as it should i throw it out or replace it.. haha

thank you on the props chris.. it is a lovely car.. going to spend a few days detailing it soon so should be very clean and protected when i'm finished even if it will spend most of its time under the cover :p

ps i wear black socks haha

ill get some better pics up soon. im surprised on the forum there isn't a topic on each section showing everyones cars or ones they admire or like from searching the internet... just a thought u can shoot me later if its a rubbish idea :)
 
If you want a second opinion from someone in your neck of the woods, I can't recommend John Holland at Unit 11 in Warrington highly enough. Probably one of the most knowledgable (and approachable) Porsche indies in the UK.

welcome to the world of 3.2 ownership.
Usual heart attack syndrome with the oil level dial...use it only on dead flat at idle when warm to check the level, otherwise ignore what it does when driving along. The oill pressure one is to watch...weve all been there.

Hi, I'm new on here as well, altho' been on the tipec forum for ever only just joined PCGB at the NEC, hopefully meet some of you at some of the events in the future, names Lindsay and my drive is an '86 911SSE, I've been to many car events in the past and some of you may have seen my car on the tipec stand at the NEC
