Hello from a new member, with a new 944

ghost

New member
Hi. I've just bought a 1990 944 S2 in Guards Red. Apparently, it used to belong to a PCGB member from Essex. He traded her in for a concours 968. Are you here David?

It's in great condition for the year. It will the 'project car' for me and my teenage son to fettle and tinker. My last Porsche was a 993, which I sold in 2004. It feels great to be back in the PCGB gang and I'm looking forward to getting to meet fellow enthusiasts at the club/register meets. I pick up my new beauty next weekend after the dealer has done a bit of tidying.

Hi and welcome to the best forum for 944s, and the best on the PCGB site!
Good luck with the new car, drive and enjoy!
Keep checking in -there are always things going on.
Mike

Thanks for the warm welcome, Mike. I'm really excited about the new toy. It drove beautifully and had a complete PCGB folder of receipts, photos and stuff. Ex-PCGB member is a good tag line for a sales advert. I saw two cars today, both advertised for the same price on PistonHeads. The other one was a total duffer! Let's hope I don't end up eating my words once my new racy-red girl gets home.

Hi Mate. Congrats on the return to Porsche ownership. I bought the same car about 6 mths ago (a guards red 1990 944S2) and have already reached 3000 miles since purchase. Its been extremely reliable and fun so far! Good luck with your machine.

Welcome, it'll be interesting to hear a view from someone trading from 993 to 944. It's usually the other way around, with people "trading up" to the rear-engined cars, then saying for years that they should have never sold the 944!

hiya mate, a warm welcome and great to hear of another guards red s2 out and about in essex[im in wanstead] and hope to meet up in the near future, regards jason p

Hi Marcus, good choice as S2's are known to be the fastest model of 944 [:D]

(You'll get used to the in jokes on here soon enough, I'm sure. Good to have you on here; keep us posted with how you get on with the car.)

Oli.

Hi and welcome, they are great cars and am sure you will love it (even us 951 owners quite like them [;)]).

Congrats on trading 'up' to a front ender ! , you mentioned going to meets , where abouts are you.

Regards Mas

Hello and welcome, a fine choice the S2, means you can spend all the money you'll save on turbo mods on other much better things, like front end respays, reconditioned wheels and maybe a promax chip!

Hope to see you and the new purchase around soon.

Edd

Wow, what a friendly welcome! Thanks people. Sorry I've not replied as I've just got back from a short vacation in Amsterdam.

andrew_churcher - 3K miles in 6 months! That's encouraging. I was told that Red cars are more reliable ;-)

pauljmcnulty - I sold my last 933 (I've had two) in 2005 and have had non-Porsche's since then. My current daily driver is an Audi TT Mk2 (bought new in 2007). The TT is such fun that I can't bring myself to sell it just yet (or more likely, trade it in for a 997) so I've gone for a 944 to tinker and fettle as my 2nd car.

jasonp/ukmastiff - the S2 came from Essex, but it's now with me in Berkshire (near Reading).

wolfie308 - It HAD to be Red. I had a guards red 944 on my bedroom wall when I was a young boy, so this is a dream fulfilled. In fact, I've still got the original Porsche poster!

Suffolk944 - I'm already getting the jist of the 951 vs 944 banter.. LOL

Copperman05 - I'd better start saving then. The body and wheels are in great condition. The engine is clean, but tired looking. I intend to spruce it up. Corroded aluminium looks so tatty - any tips?

Don't worry about reliability. I did just shy of 20k miles in the space of one year in my S2. The only time it let me down was when I left the lights on and flattened the battery.

Look after it. Service it regularly. Keep on top of any minor niggles and small things that go wrong. And drive it - a lot.

Enjoy.

Oli.

(P.S. 951 = 944 turbo. They like to think they are a bit apart from us mere 944 owners, hence the different number. Poor chaps; they are all a bit 'special'.) [;)]

Welcome to the forum
Shame it's an S2, but otherwise it seems a sound buy! (correct colour at least)

My 951 has just had it's first major issue (Broken Wastegate pipe) in over a year of driving, I think it is actually down to me driving it less than it has done in the past, so I have re-structured my insurance so I can do more miles, and my current contract means I have to use it every day (yipee!)

Mine is a whippersnapper at 22 years old and 199k miles and is my main car

My Mum said I was special

Everyone knows the S2 is the superior car, that's why all the turbo owners have to keeping chucking money on mods to keep up with us 3 litre supremos.

Its true...[&o]

I'm searching for insurance - anyone got any advice? Best so far is Cherished Vehicle Insurance http://www.cherishedporsches.com at just £204 inc. legal cover, £100 excess and £60 w/screen excess. However, this is with a limit of 3K miles per and based on some of your responses, this may not be enough [:D]

Amen, brother! [:D]

Last year Swinton Classic was the best for me, £201 for 5k miles, this year I have switched to normal insurance and Aviva Quoted me happy at £280 for 8k miles....except they haven't asked what my starting mileage is! (Includes declaration of my Air filter upgrade)
Obviously an S2 will be cheaper on insurance, as they are slightly slower...

Classic Line are the cheapest for many but every circumstance is different so its worth calling around the main classic brokers and find a price for you.
