Hello, new chap with nice black S2

Ade B

New member
I thought I'd better introduce myself, I'm Ade, and I'm the proud new owner of James_G's nice and shiny 944 S2 in Panther black as mentioned in this thread:
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=480334

I am bizarrely downgrading from a Maserati 4200 Cambiocorsa (yep, as usual, house buying is involved). I will be missing the V8 paddock of 390 ponies - not to mention that noise, styling, comfort... ahem, but needs must and I've tried to make sure my next car was as fun as possible!

So as well as devoting over my new S2, my plan is to use it for my daily commute (which is a nice combination of A and B roads), so is there anything I should be wary of if I'm using one everyday?

Other small questions I have (although obviously I plan to do some searching on the forum); wondering if there are any recommendations on what overmats to buy, and I'm after a bit of insurance advice. Considering I will be using it daily, do you think I would be better off just going for a more mainstream insurance company or would a classic car broker be the better option?

Cheers, Ade

Hi Ade

Welcome to the forum and congrats on choosing a 944 , you won't regret it...:)
Can't help much with overmats although there are some advertised on ebay as the best fit you can buy, perhaps someone else here has them and can comment.
You'll also find on the PCGB forum advice for insurance either mainstream or classic, mine is mainstream as I don't have a second car and I use my 944 daily. I use CIS , they are not the cheapest around but I do find them to be the most reliable in as far as pay outs are concerned plus I use there roadrescue service which is far cheaper than AA or RAC and with better cover too including Europe.

Anyway.. welcome and have fun with your new toy...[:)][:)]

Hi Ade, Welcome [:)]

Overmats huh? I have had some trouble with bad fitment from Ebay Mats, I bought some for my Alfa a few months back and Erm.....
they were rubbish!

I got my mats from porsche shop, altho i haven't gotten round to driving with them to see if they move about much the quality is not bad.

As for insurance, the cheapest i have found is with Swinton, However.... as with all insurances its to do with circumstance, so DO shop around, and use all the comparison sites as swinton were more expensive on one but the cheapest on another ?????

Hi Ade,

Nice car, always fancied a 944 in black, seems to suit the 944 very well. I just came back from a driving holiday in Scotland and was mightly impressed with my S2. Eats up the miles on the motorway with ease and felt very tight and solid through the twisty bits over the Grampian Mountains, a drive I would recommend to anyone.
Add to that superb Porsche build quality, zero depreciation and great boot space (for a sports car) its a winning combination.
Seems that you have done your homework and got a well cared for example, shouldnt be any expensive surprises.

Welcome to the foray and enjoy your new (relative) Porsche. I am...

Edd

I used mine as a daily driver and just insured with Sainsbury's as any other car. £380 pa iifrc for a 1990 S2.

I'd imagine it'll be cheaper than the Maser.

Hi Ade, welcome on board and good choice of colour [;)]

You can still get genuine mats from Porsche for around £70 delivered (there have been a few threads about this recently). The quality and smell really blow away the cheapy £40 and £20 offereings from aftermarket suppliers. I recommend you call the Exeter Porsche Centre as they are always very helpful to 944 Forum members and give a good price.

Another good set of mats can be bought from www.autostyle.co.uk I had a set for my S2 11 years ago and they are only now starting to wear out. They actually cost more than the Porsche ones do now []

Have fun in the new toy [:)]

Hi and welcome to the mad hpuse.

Great choice of car. I use mine regularly but a van for work. They are great fun !

Welcome, I'm sure you'll be be very happy with James' car. [:)]

Most Classic policies have a mileage limit, won't cover business use or commuting, and mine actually requires proof of other cars for all named drivers. They are designed to be cheap, as they are for careful, mature drivers with secure parking and the cars only taken out for the odd "concourse" trip.

Not to say it's impossible to get a cheaper quote for a classic policy, but I'd be very careful about disclosing everything to the insurer. My brother works for a specialist law firm specifically investigating any little error tiny error in order to save the insurers paying out. It might be safer to pay a few £s more to get a more comprehensive cover.

Hello again Ade.

Daily driving of S2's is the way to keep them working well. Keep them up to date with the servicing and belt changes and whatnot, keep an ear half-open at all times for odd noises and drive and enjoy! Using them regularly (and hard) keeps the mechanicals in good nick and makes them less prone to rust (although you do need to wash them carefully and often if they get salt on them.)

Mine is an only car and daily driver, and does around 15-16k miles a year. It's insured through A-Plan insurance, with Markerstudy. Never had to claim (off them) so can't comment on how good they are, but I have no reason to think they are better or worse than anyone else.

Oli.

Cheers guys, you have made me feel most welcome.

After a thorough search on the forum I decided to go for a set of overmats from the Ambassador online shop. Obviously some genuine ones would of been nice, but since the whether appears to be turning (depressing isn't it) I thought I'd just get some reasonable ones I don't mind getting dirty!

Also as advised I went with a mainstream insurance company and managed to get a policy for just over £300, which is a good £500 less than the Maserati to insure so happy days! Talking of which, if anyone is interested I've now advertised the 4200 on Pistonheads here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1223586.htm

Cheers, Ade
