hello,possible new 944 owner.

hello,just joined up yesterday.
ive been a watercooled vw nut for a good few years now,ive owned various mk1 golfs/mk2/golfs/jetta's/cabriolets,and i currently still own a bare shell mk1 golf and my daily vw corrado g60.

ive always liked 944's and ive always loved rwd (in fact i hate fwd[>:]) and my dad had what was probably one of the mintest 944's about, but it was written off due to a blow out[:-]

anyway,at the moment i am just 'considering' getting rid of the corrado for a 944,ive got around £4k in the corrado so i dont really know what sort of 944 that would get me?

im a big n/a fan,love carbs/throttle bodies etc.
am i right in saying that early 944's are 2.5? and late are 2.7? both 8v?
and the s2 is 3.0 16v?

just looking for opinion/advice on what i could be looking for,and basically wether you think id be happy with the move to owning a 944 of some sort.
the corrado is supercharged and has around 180 brake horse, and it has a polished set of design 90's too[8D]

cheers,neil.

You're pretty much right. There were not many 2.7 944s (only 1988 I think) and you'd struggle to get a decent S2 for £4k unless you don't mind fixing some issues after you buy it. There is also the 2.5 16V 944 S from '87 to '88.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I think you'd struggle to find a 944 as fast as the Corrado to be honest - I remember having trouble with a G60 10 years ago when I was in a 911 Carrera 3.2. Only the S2 would be in with a shout. Mind you the G60 isn't known for being bombproof so you should see an improvement in reliability and I understand Corrados cost a lot to run which needn't be the case for a 944.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

cheers fen,

yep,the corrado's do have a good few common faults,in fact its my first one and its been nothing but trouble to be honest.

im just at that stage ya know, ive only had it for 6 months and i dont know where to turn,i do seriously need something rwd,and i love the feel of the 944's,real drivers car i think?

am i right in saying the 2.5 944 is 160 brake? same power as the corrado as standard, mine isnt what id call fast anyway really.(my old mk1 golf would have sucked it in and spat it out[8D])

what about the 944 turbo then? just wondering how much more maintenence having the turbo leads to? and the power compared to the n/a models?

sorry,i realise im probably asking very old/boring questions here!

cheers,neil.

welcome! I had a corrado for a while too. a red 16v which did me absolutely fine (until I realised the benefits of RWD and Porsche development!) Does your automatic spoiler still work? [;)]

As Fen says, after a G60, a bog standard early 944 will not seem quick in a straight line, but it will be tons better in the twisty stuff once you get the hang of it. An early Turbo may be a better "step-up", but you'll struggle to get a good-un for £4k.

There's a very good 944 tech site here: http://www.cantonia.com/watercooler.html

although it's American and some of the numbers may not be spot on (IIRC, some models had slightly less power to keep the tree-huggers at bay, but don't ask me which ones!. it wasn't a huge difference anyhow!), it's still a good mine of technical info. If you don't mind spending a couple of quid, find the 924/944/968 book by Peter Morgan. It's more UK based.

This: http://www.944central.com/ isn't bad either! Oh, one thing on those sites, the years available on the 2.7's are different as they were imported a year later to the US, but apart from that......

Running wise, as long as nothing goes wrong, a Turbo and an N/A will cost you the same. even if something does go wrong, generally costs will only increase if you blow the turbo, but of course there's always exceptions! for instance, if you break a cam tensioner pad on an S2, you'll need a second mortgage, where the Turbo doesn't have one. it's all relative!

have a good poke around the old threads on here, and over on www.rennlist.com , and you'll get some good pointers on what to look for, what to make sure you have receipts on when you buy etc etc.

Oh and unless you're confident with a set of spanners, don't expect just chucking it in for a services at a dealer to be the same as your VW. far from it in fact!!

pikey,
yep the spoiler works for the minute! after replacing the control unit just under the dash board.

i think my best bet is to probably save some cash up to put towards either a turbo or an s2 i think,or maybe spend less/similar on an immaculate 2.5/2.7? thats the thing with me,i just couldnt buy anything thats got dents or slight scratches(real perfectionist),so mainly id like to find something thats 110% solid and honest.

right,so while i start saving ill get some reading done (thanks for the links m8[8D]) and try decide on what i should do.

thanks guys[8D]
