Thanks for the warm welcome, yes i hope it is soon. Just in time for the summer, for what little sun we get up here !

Hi Dave, I'm new here too, having been lurking around and in the tipec forum too. The one advice everyone seems to be giving is not to buy from a dealer as prices are too high. Have no experience if this is true and not knocking the car or dealer you are looking at (and it does look tidy!) but the price does seem low for a sorted S2 unless I'm wrong.

I had been thinking about spending £2.5-3k on a 944 S2 but worried now about buying a problem.

Will be interested to find out what this one is like once you see it Thursday

Best of luck
Andy

I had come to that conclusion already! Guessing have to be £5k + for a reasonable S2? I think I'm going to have to sort in my mind if I want an S1 or S2 and spend accordingly, I certainly don't want to buy an old dog![;)]

Then call me Andy![;)] The user name has nothing to do with my backside, or hair, not that you'd know that lol

I would say £4-5k for a decent S2, more if you want a low milage show winner or cabriolet. Get your hands on a decent buyers guide and go from there. Things to look out for are rusty sills, cam belt and chain, recent clutch change.

Or you could just buy the first one you see because you 'like' it....[;)]

I think you'll find a nice S2 for £3,500. Anything more than that then it is either low miles or an owner who is over valuing their car. Find a private buyer who has owned their car for a few years and spent a bit of money looking after it and you wont go far wrong.

Hello Andy

I am just trying to look at as many 944 as i can, just to build my knowledge on them. Have noticed the dealers can be a bit pricer. As this one is not too far away from me i thought i would have a look anyway.

Cheers David

I dont blame you! Let us know how this one pans out, it does look nice but will be interesting to see if the price tag and the condition match

Cheers
Andy

I take it yours was a cheap one then Alpine? Why else would you talk down the value of the S2? Your own car may only be worth £3500 to you, but I can tell you this, I would not sell mine for less the £5000 and I think it is worth every penny and more. Clearly the current market is flooded with cheap banger 944s, and even cheap average 944s, but one day surely the dross will be gone, the numbers or cars left will be much fewer, the ones left will then be properly cared for, and thus as the car gets rarer, its value should increase. Currently the 944 is the ultimate poor mans porsche. Not a title I am keen to promote. You should all be talking values UP not down for christ's sake !

hi Scotty, I wouldn't say mine was cheap, I paid £5,200 in 2004. Mine is like yours, pretty much mint, well looked after, garaged and only brought out when it is dry. I agree that talking the prices up is good but I'm a bit more realistic than that. Yours may well be worth £5k (and mine might be too, although I'm at 142k miles, so I doubt it) but £5k is a lot of money for a 20 year old car and you might have to wait a while for the right buyer turns up. Your average 30 years old will probably chose a Boxster for similar money.

Hi Dave .I live in Ayr and would be more than happy to show you the points to look out for.I am currently restoring an s2 and you can see all the bad bits on here in another post. The post is What lies beneath. If you want to have a look just pm me and that can be arranged.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the S2! Welcome and please, please check, check, check the state of the bodywork on the car! :)

Good luck!

Yet again you have a dig at other 944 owners!!! []

The number of 944's is dropping, but it will be a long while before they become rare and start commanding premium prices..

Well Andy i went to see the car, from what 944 i have seen before it wasnt worth the money. Pretty rough around the edges, the sills had been done before but to a poor standard. Starting to show signs of rust on the sill, on the rear of the front arches and at the front of the rear arches. The interior for some reason was in fantatic condition, half black leather pin stripe. But the final straw was that the owner couldnt get it to start ! So i did a runner !
So the search continues.

That's (almost) difficult to believe. Selling a car and hadn't started it beforehand or didn't disclose it was a sticky starter? I agree it did look very decent in the photo.

As a note of caution, and I'm not an expert. I consider checking the oil and screenwash a major achievement: just as I don't do my own dentistry I don't attempt amateur car repairs! [&:]

I've always understood that you should avoid a car that's sitting on the seller's drive, all warmed up with the engine running. Non-starting could be as simple as a flat battery or a failed DME relay. Often, people are selling cars because they aren't used: my previous Lux sat on the drive unused whilst being sold, and the alarm system would flatten the battery over two weeks or so. It wasn't a poor starter, just in need of a battery conditioner or a new owner.
