Just taken delivery of my MY12 Cayman R PDK in Peridot Green, came out of an Audi R8 V8 and my first experience of a (modern) Porsche.
First impressions are good, obviously not as powerful or quick as the R8, and the brakes take some adjusting to, you actually have to stamp on the pedal to get the thing to stop - where the R8 was very 'digital' in terms of stopping.

However, really impressed overall with the Cayman R - PDK box seems much smoother than the Audi R-Tronic, plus now makes shopping a little more fun (or any excuse to nip out for a drive0 - could never have fitted the weekly shop in the R8 (why would you?) but the double 'boot' on the Porsche made it a doddle.

Quick question, anyone taken up the offer of the free drivers day at Silverstone? Is it any good? I live 500+ miles away so it's a major undertaking to go down for this and wouldn't want to bother if it's just another track 'experience' day - had plenty of those - ideally I'd like to be able to learn a little about the car and it's handling at illegal speeds :)

Looking forward to the next 2 years and we'll see how I'm feeling about the Porsche owning experience by then.

Cheers, Colin

Hi Colin, Welcome to the fold, I suppose that the Audi brakes are set more for the none enthusiast driver who presses the pedal and just expects to stop, Porsches have more general feel and plenty of direct feedback which increases the pleasure of driving. I had one of the free days at Silverstone in a Gen 2 Cayman and it was very useful particularly using the different types of skid pans, Ice Hill, Kick Plate etc. The instructor was very good and speeds on the handling circuit were getting into the illegal levels on the back straight but on there I was only driving a 2.9 which didn't have the kick of my Gen 1 Cayman S. The handling circuit is very twisty after all it is set up to give you practice in the handling, not ultimately high speeds do the handling circuit then take a track day.

Hi Colin Welcome to Cayman ownership & you will enjoy your Cayman R & reference to the Driving day at Silverstone it well worth going on as its part of the package of owning a new porsche car & its not on the Silverstone track its on Porsche own driving track & you learn many new skills from the kick plate to the Ice Hill. Go onto the Porsche Cars GB web site & you will find a link to the Silverstone Experence site & you will see what you will miss & I think from my day there when I brought my Cayman S in 2008 lunch was inc & if you still don't think its for you maybe you can sale the event on to another Cayman owner & also for your information you will not use your Cayman they will let you use one of there own cars as part of the deal. Think long & hard before you turn it down even with your 1000 mile round trip & if you still like to do the event & don't like to put 1000 miles on your new Cayman maybe go in another car as its a event not to be missed. Yours sincerely Kevin.[:)] Ps I think you have gone for the best colour in the Cayman R colour range.
