Help: 2006 C2S Oil Leak, Oil dripping onto driveway

Hi Guys

When I went out today and backed my car off the driveway I noticed a patch of oil left in the area of the drivers side rear wheel under the car. I had a look underneath the car from the back and can see an area saturated with oil from where it is dripping slowly.

I have taken 2 photos and uploaded them so hopefully someone will know what is the likely cause of this leak? I had both the RMS and IMS seals replaced under warranty in Feb 2011 just before my warranty expired (at the time the RMS was only weeping slightly) and since then I have noticed the car has used a lot more oil (before the seals were changed it didn't drink a drop of oil in 2000 miles, since the RMS/IMS work the car has 'used' 1.5 litres in 1200 miles).

I am not completely sure that the car hasn't been leaking oil for a longer time period as I may not have noticed the patch before.

I am out of warranty now, is it possible that the RMS/IMS seals were not replaced correctly or is the area that the oil is dripping from completely unrelated?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's not your RMS - it's too far back for that. It might be your off-side rocker cover that's leaking - or something more in that sort of area. Your RMS would be more in front of you rear axle - between the engine and the gearbox.

Not sure whether you'll be able to post this on the 996 forum as well - that way Richard might have a look at it for you. (996 set up is pretty much the same as the 997.1)

What ever it is, it's coming from above what you can see in the pics.

Adrian.

Hi Guys

Quick update I took the car to a local mechanic mate of mine earlier today and we took a look under the car properly.

He cleaned off all the oil junk with some kind of cleaner so we could get a better look and we discovered that the actual leak is coming from the that part that was covered in oil originally. The oil is not leaking from somewhere further up in the engine bay as once we cleaned it we could see that there was corrosion/rust on that part which after 20 mins started to weep oil again.

Does anyone know what that actual part is that I have highlighted in the attached photos? I'm hoping its just a seal gone or that the part is inexpensive and not a big job to replace touch wood.

The car is currently leaking about 20 ml of oil a day. Any tips on how to go about replacing the part would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like the same leak as I had on mine. Apparently poorly made unit that rusts through and then ironically leaks oil. It cost about £400 to have sorted. I am trying for the life of me to recall what the item is called - some sort of pump I think.

That will be the tandem pump you are thinking about, but by the looks of the photo the leak could be from a oil pump gasket or an o-ring of the tandem pump.
