HELP!!!! 82 targa Fuel Pump

Hi All, got a 1982 targa and the fuel pump chatters, when it makes this noise it wont start, if I fiddle with the ignition (ie turn on and off...alot) its stops and the car runs? I have changed the pump...no joy, I have bypassed the wiring direct to earth and fuse and it still does it....any ideas????

Sounds strange.The fuel pump normally starts whining louder than usual before it fails in my experience.It may chatter if it is trying to rotate but is too stiff or not getting sufficient current I suppose.Are you sure it's not the fuel pump relay making the noise? It should be a red heavy duty one,not a black one like the rest.Though my car ran a black one for years until I found this out myself!
