Help / advice in R15

Hi to all,
Recently developed a pronounced engine rattle, I'm fairly sure it's a big end ( or ends) - is there anyone within striking distance of Taunton able & willing to lend an ear for a 2nd opinion ? Currently on 120k miles with no documented evidence of a previous bottom end rebuild.
Thanks in advance for all help & advice.

Alex

doubt it would be the bottom end, most likely valve guide wear if anything, mileage isn't excessive so don't get pushed in the wrong direction with an expensive rebuild.

Thanks for the replies - a bit more info:
1. It's loud. Loud enough for me to hear distinctly over the roof-down wind roar and (sports) exhaust at m/way speeds, and worrying enough to baby the car home on A roads.

2. It's revs related - one 'knock' per revolution.

what's the oil consumption? any lose of power? smokey exhaust?

sounds more like valve gear to me, but then you'd be experiencing other more noticeable problems

Hi Nige
Smokes on start-up if left for days, none noticeable under acceleration or over-run - oil pressure is per the handbook, oil consumption is not overly dramatic, I'd say about 1 to 2 litres/5000 miles..?? The engine does feel 'tired' though.

a tick or a rattle still sounds like valve train or could even be an exhaust leak right at the heat exchanger flange. If it were big ends if would be a much deeper thump from within.

A puff of smoke on start up is fine, provided it clears. 120k mike isn't excessive for these engines, at worst it sounds like a top end overhaul to me, otherwise is could just be something simple as an exhaust flange. If I were you I'd post over on the IB forum http://www.impactbumpers.com/ you'll get more answers there.
