Hi,

I recently purchased a Boxster s, 05 plate 20,000 miles on the clock. I was driving it home on Friday and pulled up to a round about where it just stopped. I got it restarted and it was missing so I limped it home for about 1 mile. Reversed on to my drive and it was making a bit of a racket. Turned it off and got out and noticed that oil was leaking everywher.

Obviously I have not touched it since and there were no warnings of any sort - Does anybody have any idea what the issue may be

Thanks

Nick

Nick, I'm afraid this sounds like intermediate shaft failure - or more likely, the bearing on the end of it breaking up. The oil spillage is a key indicator. That and the noise that you heard.

Is the car under warrantee? Theres loads of stuff on here about this problem. There's no easy way to put it mate... it's likely to be a big one!

I do have a warranty with it, I have only had the car 8 weeks I bought the car from a porsche approved dealer but of course nobody wants to do anything until tuesday

I'm not a mechanic and feared the worse, there is a lot of stuff on this forum about this? I can not believe that this has happened - It is under warranty but I fear there is a limit

Nick, OPC's seem to have a fairly good track record in dealing with this particular problem. If it is I.S. failure, with an 05 car at 20k miles there should be no issue whatsoever with them picking up the tab. And you have a warranty.

It's the disapointment and inconvenience that you will have to put up with. Your pocket shouldn't suffer too much. If at all...!

Racket sound + oil dumping on the ground = intermediate shaft failure. That is my vote as well.

Enjoy your replacement engine....

Hi, if it's anykind of consolation to you, this happened to me last Saturday. I only had my car for 7 days. It is a 2004 Anniversary Edition with 11k miles. I had a loud clunking noise coming from the engine which was followed by all the warning lights coming on. I pulled over to see the engine dump all the oil. The RAC towed me to a OPC. On Monday it was diagnosed as Intermediate Shaft Failure. The OPC applied to Porsche to do the replacement engine on Goodwill. On Tuesday they agreed to do the job 100% on goodwill, that is parts and labour and consumables. I got a phone call yesterday to say that my car was finished ready to be picked up! The whole process including shiping the engine over from Germany took 5 days. The car is now like new. I hope this makes you feel better.

Mike,

not a great start to Porsche ownership but I am pleased it was sorted in such a satisfactory way!

btw, I have had three Boxsters, my current one is 6 years old, the only problems have been mild RMS and replacement disks. Oh, and the odd puncture[]. It has never not started.

Have you joined the Club yet, as I will set you as a member

God, this is worrying guys, looks like Nick's car is a late model. I was picking up the indications on the forum that the late models (3.2 engines that is) had all been fixed, looks like this is not the case. I bought my Boxster S (55 Reg now 23k miles) a year and half ago and now waiting for the BANG every time I drive it !!! Although I've got the extended warranty it's still worrying "¦. Does any one know if Porsche ever fixed this problem and if so what chassis/ engine serial number the cut in was. Surely the Porsche OPC knows, don't they ???

Cheers, a very worried Mike

Porsche beefed-up the area for the 987, but I think that was for model year 2006. 987 model year 2005 can have an intermediate shaft failures like the older 986s.

I am led to believe that the intermediates shaft has been beefed up on newer and Porsche replacement engines. However, Porsche were not confident enough to give me a warranty on my new engine. In fact, they downright refused. []

Mike,

if you had paid for the repair, you would get an automatic 12 months warranty. Sad fact with warranty repairs, only the original warranty period applies.

NicD, that's an interesting observation. Where is that set out? Does a replacement engine constitute a repair?[X(]

Isn't it 24 months if you pay? It used to be for those that paid for RMS....

As Nic says, if a repair is done under warranty, only that warranty period applies. Not 12/24 months.

Hi

You kindly replied to an email regarding an issue that I had with my car and you suffered the same fate. Well indeed it did require an engine replacement which I am glad to say Porsche sorted at no cost to me whatsoever.

Cheers for your help

If you pay for a part from Porsche, it has a 2 year warranty.

If you have a repair carried out gratis under a Porsche warranty, the warranty on that part ends when your warranty on the entire car ends.

Not sure where it stands when you pay part of a repair under warranty, but they usually wangle it so your paying a labour part of the job rather than the parts side.
