there i was just joining the m3 motorway and from 4th gear a loud bang and no gears, i pushed in the clutch and rolled to a stop. when i let the clutch out im in first gear. the gear knob travels backwards and forwards only and wont select any gears at all. the car is in 1st gear .. i have lifted the gater inside the car and the selector rod is fixed the the gear stick and is traveling backwards and forwards.

the question is. new selector linkage if so how much and how difficult or do i just send it in to porsche . its only done 18k miles and is an 07 c4s. please quick i feel like im bleeding i cant beleve it broken car magic RUBBISH

Hi Nick, this is a feature of the 07 model year cars for some reason, your local dealer will magically have a stock of gear selector cables. It is a warranty job, or if you haven't renewed warranty it's a few hundred quid, less than £300 I think but I'm sure it won't be long before Tom O'K is on to let us know...!

Nick

mine went at approx 21k miles and is an 07 model, went on the Isle of Man (of all the places to go) so it was a low loader back to Essex......

Porsche Main dealer is approx £300, or go to a good specialist Porsche independent. I wouldn't trust some one else.

The gear cable is a rather complex route through the inside of the car and into the engine bay. Without a full workshop manual you may struggle to get all the trim off correctly without breaking clips or damaging it. Surprised this cable issue hasn't been fixed , its been around on all the 987/997 models for some time now , with a number of part revisions as a result. The cable itself is about 130 pounds i beleive , I'd sugest about 2-3 hours to fit. You also need the lock bridge when re assembling to ensure the gear lever is properly aligned before reconnecting/ adjusting the cables. If the selector lever is in the wrong position the gear selecting can at best be notchy at worst you may not be able to select certain gears. The lock bridge tool / part is a few pounds but invaluable/ a necessity if you are doing this yourself.

Well done you, I would have had a moan at Porsche but your fixing it is probably the best route!
