Hi, just purchased a 2001 boxster s 3.2 ltr, fitted a new k and n air filter after noticing the stock was was dirty,
i was driving along then the emission control warning light has come on!
also it takes like 8 minuets for the car to check the oil level rather then 5 seconds, plus the car is running slightly below the normal idle speed but think the car is in safe mode, can anybody help me please ?! thanks

Hi

Sounds like you may have got some oil on yiour MAF from your K&N???

I have read on other Forums of this happening K&N'S can cause more harm than just running your stock filter?

You need to get the car on to a diagnostic to check it out Andy at Mini spares (01617611615) in Bury Manchester is really good or Chris Sanderson (01706826060) at Loe bank Motors in Edednfield is a Porsche specialist.

Good luck

Its only the air filter so no oil is on it , it was a little hard to put in but on the instantiation instructions said that it might be,
i have driven 90 miles since we put it in so do not think it is the cause of the problem, but has seen that i am loosing alot of miles off of the trip computer lost about 25 miles in like 1 mile of travel!

Welcome to the forum and to Porsche ownership Paul.!

If you've just fuelled it up, check that the filler cap is on tight and I'd re-check the K&N filter installation (presumably you didn't have the problem beforehand).

It could be the MAF or one of the Lambda (O2) sensors (presumably it's a relatively high mileage car) but with all the other problems you're experiencing, it sounds as though it would be useful to hook it up to a diagnostic system for a thorough check-out.

If you purchased from a dealer, they should be your first port of call to resolve the problems.

Hope you resolve your problems soon and start enjoying the car.

Hello thank you both for the replys, i didnt have the problem before the new air filter but the old one was mucky,

These series cars utilize a Mass air flow sensor made by Bosch that is installed after the airfilter and before the engine, this sensor uses a thin metal wire that is cooled by the air coming into the engine and uses that information to determine the amont of air is coming in. This style mass air flow sensor does not like the aftermarket style air filters that require air filter oil. It contaminates the Mass air flow sensor and typically requires the sensor to be replaced, you can try cleaning it, it requires a security torx bit size t20, you need to make sure its the security style bit. And only clean the sensor with either Mass airflow sensor cleaner or electronics cleaner, brake cleaner or carb cleaner will damage it, also make sure it is dry before reinstalltion.
what do you guys think

Hence our reference to the MAF, Paul.

I'm not familiar with the K&N filter you've installed. You say that you've not had to coat it in oil (usually this is supplied by K&N) but perhaps it's already oil-impregnated and this is what's causing your problem.

If that's the case, you may have to replace (or try to clean) the MAF sensor and also replace the filter with an OE item.

Thank you , yes i have blew the k & n air filter and saw how much came from it, im going to try and re set the ecu and see if the maf can clean its self as i think they run an electrical current though its self every time it starts up, if not a trip to halfords for some cleaner, then after that a new maf :(. its my own silly fault for trying to improve the performance like i did on my other car a classic Subaru impreza turbo

The MAF draws a current continuously, so there might (hopefully!) be a burn-off effect, and presumably you've not done too many miles with the K&N filter fitted.

Cleaning the MAF can be a bit hit-and-miss, but it's probably worth a punt since a replacement is likely to be £200+.

Good luck with a fix.

Thanks, just put the battery back on and guess what , the warning light has gone out!
lucky i also have the porsche cd unlock code also, i shall go for a run in it after dinner then if its working i shall not be messing around with it in any form! thanks for the advise guys
ps....
know anything about breaks ? hehe i have read up that apparently porsche have break assist but i don't know weather it is working on mine as it does not seem to have much stopping power yet all the disks and pads look fine thanks Paul

I don't think that it's fitted to your 2001 Boxster - the Gen II cars have it.

With brake assist, the braking circuit is pre-charged (the pads are in light contact with the discs) to provide a more rapid brake response.

If you're not used to Porsche brakes, you need to give them a very firm push, particularly at low speeds - this is a well known Porsche virgin problem..!
