My 996 Cab has been showing some electrical gremlins, Occassionally when turning on Headligghts I get a couple of Red lights show on the Dash, switch off and re-start and all OK. Sometimes the Backlight to the instrument cluster does not come on, and yesterday whilst driving along with Headlights on the Interior lights came on and then faded out, nad then came on again and again faded out. This morning started car, turned on lights, backed out of drive and interior lights came on and faded out. I think this is either Ingnition switch related or Headlight switch related, and one any ideas. If ign switch do I need just the switch or the complete barrel.

Most likely the headlight switch. Min did a great DIY for the member's Technical Articles section. I have put a copy here for you: http://www.hamilton.myzen.co.uk/temp/light_switch_diy.pdf

Thank you Richard, kind of you to include link with pictures, New Switch it is then .... ordered will post the outcome. Have found one other thing .. the interuior lights only seem to misbehave when the lights are turned on. Image

list of items this one switch feeds:

Front headlights
Front fog
Front side lights (pair)
Front/Rear side (left only)
Front/Rear side (right only)
Rear side (pair)
Rear fog
Rear number plate
Instrument panel light
Light's on warning buzzer

This may be entirely off the wall, but thought I'd mention it just in case all else fails. In my experience, one of the greatest causes of rogue intermittent lights is a bad earth connection as shared by a number of elecrical devices. so that when the earth connection becomes very high resistance, the current can find an easier way to earth through another light. This can vary as the car is driven, just through varying mechanical stress on the physical earth connection.

Hope your simple solution works, but if not you may like to have a look at that.

Further update .... Apparently my car has two problems, The first .. A malfunctioning LIght Switch which is the cause of intermittent Instrument Cluster lighting issues. Secondly, the sudden onset of Interior lights illuminating whilst driving for no apparent reason, has shown itself to be related to another issue (developed yesterday) in that when trying to lock the car using key blipper, I got two beeps and an auto unlock ..... My Independent tell me this is likely to be a door microswitch malfunction ( they are expensive to change !!) BTW ... if anyone ever gets this problem of car refusing to lock, the auto unlock can be overridden by pressiing the blipper twice very quickly, this will then allow to car lock. Just normal faults Im told ...... more money! .... Image
