HELP: Full lock clunking sound?

Gareth, How about a little bit of info on your car - age, mileage, etc. It sounds as though your problem may be steering rack related. In the first instance, you might want to check for leaks and make sure that your PAS reservoir is full (unfortunatley, this means removing the engine cover) as well as checking for any free-play in the rack itself and in the steering/suspension joints. Hi cheers for the response. The car is 06, cayman s and 40,400 miles, full Porsche history. I purchased the car last friday and make sure i got dealership warranty (not porsche dealers). is there a way to know if the car is still covered by porsche warranty? dealer gave me "autoguards warranty". Does say it covers steering racks but hoping the dealer doesnt mess me about. The steering seems fine driving normally. It's only happens driving slow and on full lock. I'm thinking of phoning the dealer Monday to explain the situation, phone autoguard, then try and book it into Porsche Cheshire. Downside is that I need a car for Friday but never really dealt with anything like this before and don't know what to expect. I purchased a membership with Porsche club and unsure of what benefits discounts I get aswell.
Are you perhaps experiencing the typical tyre skipping on full lock, particularly when reversing? Worse on wet surfaces? If so, it is normal, due to the wide front tyres. The outside edge has to travel further than the inside edge, and you get a slip/skip effect. Wouldn't call it clunking though.
Porsche club discount at OPC's are 10% on parts but can vary with occasional offers. A slight juddering through the wheel on or near full lock isn't uncommon with power steering. But the clunk sounds like a possible joint as I don't recall a noise from hitting the stop. Do you know anyone with a Cayman or Boxster who could compare yours against? There is an active region ( R4 ) for the North West which meets at the Deanswater Hotel, Woodford.
Cheers for all the replies. I'm not 100% sure as I've never came across this before. IMO it could be sound but does feel "clunky". At first I did thing it was the tyres slipping for grip. Then I thought maybe the wheel was catching something so parked it on full lock and checked the wheel arches. If it is a sound and slight steering wheel feeling, is that steering rack/joint? What's the effects of the tyre problems? Tomorrow, I'll test and try and describe it on here as much as possible. Would record it but be illegal whilst driving xP
As you'll only be on full lock at maneuvering speed the side load on the outer tyre will load the tyre which if on a slippery surface will skip and it doesn't need to be very slippery as you're on summer tyres which are very hard as the temps drop, since the tyres are also low they will have even less flex since the tread blocks are so low. You may recognize it as a thump when the skip occurs and it can transmit through the car as a thump sound as it releases. You'll rarely need full lock except in tight car parks etc. Items which can give a knock are wheel bearings as it skips, bearings do have a clearance. Worn steering rod joints, rack ( Extremely Rare ), more common rack problems are leaking seals but to check the level in the reservoir ( easier than checking the rack for leaks ) you need to take off the engine cover and check the bottle. I get a noise turning tight right out of my drive as a neighbour sometimes parks opposite the drive and my left wheel passes over a manhole cover just at the highly loaded point and I'm trying not to drop the rear wheel down the kerb, that causes a skip and a noise especially when it's wet.
