Help identifying - this just flew off my car...??

Outrun944

Can anyone help? What is this UFO that came off the 944?

It's from underneath the car at the front, in front of the passenger side wheel. It looks like it's some kind of air intake (see 4th pic) that has a wire going to another box next to it. It's corroded off, seems to have fallen off when pulled up at traffic lights, as both passenger side tyres crunched over it :( I'm Googling away trying to find out at present with no luck so far.

Actually I think I'm fairly sure now it is.

I read up that the 944 has a twin air horn system, so that would account for the similar looking box next to it (still attached to the card ) with a wire running to it from what's left of the other box. Also the air horn has for a long time sounded rather feeble, if I'm right then I guess this horn has been dead for a long time and eventually corroded off. Can't imagine any other purpose for this box.

To put my mind at ease, can someone confirm it's an air horn? LOL [:D]

Yes that looks like the top cover ooff one of the horns. Somewhere it will have an L or an H depending if it is the high or low tone. They aren't really air horns running off a compressor they just have a spiral duct like the BOSE that make the noise. if you remember the old vibrating washer type this is just a refinement of that.

That's what I thought as well - it's the horn. Fallen apart and dropped off the car, and not helped by being driven over by you!

Oli.

Bloomin 'eck!

And I had just treated her to a luxury wash, wax and big clean inside. And this is how she treats me - BAD PORSCHE, NAUGHTY PORSCHE!

As you've discovered I've never poked around underneath the car in that bit. I tend to panic initially and get in a fluster when something bad happens with her.

Anyway, out of interest anyone replaced their horns before and where did you get them from? Found a few places so far, but just interested.
I still have one working horn so I'm sure that's legal, but it sounds rather high pitched and feeble! A bit camp! I can live with it for a while though.

Yep iv had this problem. Just as I was leaving for my MOT
I just went and bought one from halfords.

A single horn of that type does sound feeble, either the low or high. Their pitch is set so that together the beat note generated makes a loud noise. You could call them gestalt theory horns where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Yep deffo a horn ! Easy job to repair I would have thought. Standard twin horn replacement should do the trick.

If something breaks it needs to be upgraded - here's the solution: https://www.hornblasters.com
