Help. Loss of control!

Hi All. I am looking for some advice on a problem thats started to occur on my 1999 C4. When cornering to the right at reasonable speed the car seems to suddenly 'slip' from underneath me! Its a horrible feeling and results in momentary loss of control. It seems as though the ABS is cutting in just on the drivers front wheel, as it seems to 'jerk' and slow the car down whilst you lose directional control. Has anyone else experienced this problem? A friend of mine suggested it may be the traction control, but the light does not illuminate on the dash when the problem is occuring and even with it switched off using the PSM switch it still does it. The only time the problem does not appear is if I drive it fairly slowly and of course this is not always desirable! I would appreciate any feedback on this problem and possible solutions that either I can do or someone else with the knowledge! Thanks everone.

Hi,

Sounds like some form of unwanted electronic intervention - I would take it to a dealer who can interrogate the on board diagnostics to see if any sensor failures or system errors etc are recorded

Thanks Pete. I guess they will charge for this service? Anyway, sounds like the only option! P.S Nice to hear of a Porsche with some serious miles on it!

My local Indy charges £40 for diagnostics, not sure what an OPC rate would be if you took it there

Planning some more miles next week on the way to Le Mans [;)]

Could be something mechanical: steering control arm/joint, suspension mounting, wheel hub/bearings etc. Only needs one wheel to be out of line to cause a handling issue.

Thanks Guys for all your comments. Have just been to Parr in Crawley and they seem to think its one or both of the lower bushes on the rear suspension arms. They have also suggested a geometry check but sounds like it is going to be rather expensive all in. The guy at Parr took it for a drive with myself and we couldn't replicate the fault unfortunately, so I hope their hunch is right. However he did put it on the diagnostic machine for free and came up with no faults (thank you Richard for your kind offer). Anyway, got more problems now, handbrake cable snapped yesterday! Not a good week for my 996, but still love it!

IMO Parr are very expensive for alignment (and most other things) - close to OPC prices. Addspeed at Horsham have been recommended here, so it might be worth giving them a try for a comparitive quote.
