Help me find a 964!

Hi guys,

yup, still looking for a tintop 964 now, either C4 or C2 in manual.

Yesterday, went to see a J-reg 964 C4 in Slate grey I think. Anyway, was told on the phone that it was a clean late model,as usual procedures I did ask everything that needed to be asked regarding the car, before the long 250mile journey.

From a step back the car looked presentable, but when inspecting closer, it was another story.

To cut the story short, the bodywork was not great. The drivers door had been replaced, as the giveaway of the doorhindge paint was breaking away showing red and noticing the closing gap was larger between the wing and drivers door when shut. The bootlid had ripples, the rear quarter had dents and the whole of the passenger side of the car had sanding marks from the base prep-work, plus reaction to paint as faint cracks where showing.

The interior was showing signs of wear by the white interior.

What was a benefit was the undertray was missing under the engine bay, showing all with a very scabby exhaust backbox.

Wheels were curbed, brake disks were worn, calipers where chipped.

Anyway walked away, even though the seller was willing to sell the car for a reduced take it away price of £10k!

Getting a little tired now of looking, and was wondering if you guys will keep a lookout for me, if not know of someone who is selling one.

Missed out on a white low miler that Phil Raby was selling, Anyway......just to end, im not too fussy or would you do the same?

You did the right thing and walked away [:)]

You will need patience if you are going to get the car you want. These cars are old now and the pristine ones are becoming harder to find but if you wait you should be able to find one.

what was the original selling price? did you ask the seller if the car had paintwork done? just curious

£13k was the original price, would be good price for someone who wants a full restoration. Even the rubbers and plastics was perrishing. Must say some of these cars have had a hard life!

If your interested Laurence give me a shout.

Still looking folks!

Seen a Silver 1990 model with 130k miles, looks all original with large mirrors and design90 wheels, but has one scab on rear arch, had clutch, flywheel and exhaust changed, but no rebuild. Asking £14.5k, may go and look at it. Any advice? You guys think its worth that money or hold back? or even look at Sebastians red j-reg c4 for the same money?

looks to me like your either........looking for a cheap car....................or a really good car. But you wont find both in the same car ! 13k for a 64 as a starting bid puts the car in the"cheap" section. Perhaps you should lower your expectations or raise the level of what your prepared to pay!

I have two 964, one a carrera 4 with 22,500 miles on it with full main dealer service history which in this case means serviced every 12 months and not just done on mileage, orginal paint and never seen rain with no rust and in as new condition only used on very nice sunny days and it lives in a carcoon when not in use and one which I use every day which has currently got 77,000 miles on it with full service history and also in stunning condition but I guess I would want more than 14k for any of them.

As Laurence said, if you want a good one, you'll have to pay.
Last good LHD cabrio I brought over here was 16K GBP and it still needed rear bumper painting.
I've not seen many good original cars, so if you get chance of one, I'd buy it.
Don't dismiss a modified car as there are many upgrades now that optimise the 964 without compromising reliabilty(exhaust, airbox&filter, strutbrace and suspension.....not sure brakes need upgrading for 'normal' driving).

Good luck in your search, but the owners of the good cars know how much they've spent........

Market forces apply to the 964 like everything else, and when you can buy a 996 for under 20k and a Boxster for 10-12k, 14k ought to get a sound one.If you`ve put lots of cash into making yours immaculate you`ll have to expect to wave goodbye to it in today`s market or keep the car and cherish it. You can put a gold roof on a house, but if its in the wrong street its lost money, its as simple as that. I`m also looking for a 964, and have been for the last year, went to see one and it had wet carpets,a really heavy clutch, and when I suggested a professional inspection the guy rang me the next day to tell me it was sold .It was also a `90 model year according to the bonnet sticker, not the 91 he`d advertised, and he wanted 16k for it. Dream on. I`m waiting for the credit crunch to shake a few distress sales out into the open, give it a few weeks.

If you really want a 964 Norm, you will find one. Just be patient. I don't beleive you are expecting to much. You have to take what some people say about their cars with a pinch of salt! until you see them in the metal or you have been recommended by someone whom you know and trust their judgement. Obviously if the seller misleads having spoken over the phone then that's a different story. [] At that sort of distance it may be worth requesting some photos via email first. Not sure what your budget is, but as already indicated and by the impression i have from your thread, i would agree, you have to be expecting to pay 16k plus atleast. You say you missed a cracker from Phil Raby. Phil also provides a service by which he will find/source a car for the client. May be its worth giving him a call. May be also worth considering some of the respected independants. Call in, in person or leave details if you are prepared to travel. I'm sure if they know you are genuinely interested they will keep you posted. Good luck

I was looking at this yesterday thinking it would be ideal for 'when I was ready'

Although pictures can be deceiving it looks like a nice example

It came up for sale just over a week ago. I regularly keep an eye on the PH ads and I would say IMHO it is one of the best sounding C2s I've seen advertised for a while. Of course, this is subject to seeing it in the flesh.

I'm glad its not only me who keeps a regular eye in the classifieds [;)]

Thanks guys, keep them coming!

Im viewing these and as one said its very misleading with the pictures and seeing it in person.

Still looking!

As for the j-reg black C2 that was pointed out is a very nice car, but this car unforutnately is used daily, and not shy to be used. But showing battle scares of dents and stonchips, and with it being black it shows everything.
