help me with my horn pleeeeaase!!!

can anyone give me any advise?
i have a 1984 924 which has a horn that only wants to work when it wants to
i have taken the steering wheel off and cleaned up the metal ring on the back of the wheel and the little sprung contact on the colum facia.
it must be something here as if i place a wire from the contact to a direct earth the horn sounds every time.
please help as this is about the only thing left(except rear brakes) before a trip to the mot staition

Probably a poor earth to the steering column. You may need to run an earth wire from the body to the column. Use a 'loose' length of wire and use a pipe clip to secure it to the column up under the dash. Check the connections to the horns as they can corrode. Clean the fuse connections, fuse no. 1 in the aux fusebox.
