HELP!!!!! My S2 Cooling Fan's Keep On Running!

Help, PLEASE!!!!! Yesterday evening I drove my 944s2 a distance of about 12 miles (journey time approx. 40 minutes) in order to leave it at a mechanic's house to have some work done to it. Anyway, I left it there at approx. 5.40pm, at which point I noticed the cooling fans had come on (as they usually do). I later received a phone call at 8.00pm telling me that the fans were STILL running and asking me if this was normal? I've only had the car a short while so am not sure, but I immediately thought, "Houston, we have a problem!". Please can somebody tell me :

(i) Is this normal?
(ii) What could it be?
(iii) If it is a sensor problem, which one is it and where is it?
(iv) Is it a 'Porsche-only' part?
(v) Any idea of cost / how long does it take to change it?
ANY suggestions would be most appreciated - I've over-spent on the car (according to my wife, anyway!), so I'm kind of hoping I'm not going to be landed with a(nother) big bill!

CHEERS!

I agree, I had the same problem last summer, it costs about £20 for a new switch plus half an hour to fit.

It could possibly be a relay, which costs £100, but I would go for the sensor.

Your mechanic called you to ask if that was normal?

Go and get your car, take it away from him and find someone you can trust to touch it - he clearly knows nothing about 944s as that is one of the most common problems on these cars.

The others have already told you the likely fault, though it can also be the relay which is more like £100.

In the meantime (while you find a fully evolved member of the human race to work on it) you can pull the fuse (number 15 I think) to turn it off. I suggest leaving it on the dash so you remember to refit it before driving off or you surely will forget and might cook it in traffic.

Same thing on my good ladys S 2 last year.
Easy check. Remove the relay. If the fan still runs. Its the sensor. Our specialist told me its common for them to go. Picked one up at our OPC for just around a tenner. B **** r to get at though but with the right spanner a 5 min job. Quick fix is to remove the relevant fuse when your stopped so as not to drain the battery.I can sell you the spanner I bought for the job, but youve got to sell it back to me if hers goes again !!

IIRC, if you pull the connector to the switch and short the two terminals together, the fans should turn off (and in whcih case it is the switch at fault). I think I got it from www.clarks-garage.com , so have a read there to be sure of what I do actually recall!

Sounds like he knows nothing about cars full stop!

Surly if you remove the connector the fans will stop and if you connect the 2 wires together they will start

UPDATE!!!!! When the cooling fan is running, if I remove the relay (fuse number G10), the fan switches off. If I then immediately replace the relay, the fan does not immediately come on again. Any suggestions?
THANKS!!!!!
