HELP NEW BOXSTER OWNER FUEL PROBS!!!!

Was reading your posts in relation to DME on porsche and youseemed to know your porsches, i am a very worried new to the porsche scene boxter owner, i bought the car last night and she drove superb!! about 8 miles down the road on the way home i noticed under acceleration every now and then it would hold back then seem to clear and then take off, it did this a few times but seemed to keep clearing itself. Eventually about 2 miles later i was sitting in traffic and the car backfired or popped as a car would do thats running out of fuel and stalled, at the side of the road it would turn over and tick over lumpyish but if the accelerator was touched it would just stall or try to rev but could not as if no fuel?? i had the AA man come out he plugged in diagnostics and nothing came up so not engine management and the air flow meter or mass whatever and coils are all fine he said that he could not here the fuel pump prime whilst holding his ear to the tank also that the relay in the footwell is not clicking off as you would expect so he guessed at a fuel pump relay or fuel pump?? bit worried as he did not know where the engine was for ten mins or the fuel tank!! just dont want to waste money any ideas??? thanks chris
 
Not sure if this is related to your problem but I remember reading on the Rennlist Forum three or more years ago about a spate of 997s experiencing similar symptons. The solution as I remember it was to remove the fuel cap. At least its simple to try.
 
Firstly the AA can't interogate the Porsche fault codes fully, even the RAC who are contracted by Porsche assist cannot do it.

How old is the car ? how many miles ?

 
Also, what model is the car?

I agree with David - get a proper diagnostic check done by an indy. Low fuel pressure doesn't have it's own specific fault code, but will trigger one which is related.

There is a fuel pressure test point on the fuel rail to connect a test gauge. Should be 3.8bar engine off, and 3.3bar engine idling.
 
Hi just spoke to a porsche specialist and he suggested that as its been standing on a forecourt for 3 months and only moved around that it may be clogged up in his experience and has suggested putting in red ex or fuel cleaner and keep the car revving at 2000 revs and it should clear ??

Not sure thats the sort of advice i'd want to hear from a supposed specialist !

They could be right of course, there could be some water in the fuel due to condensation in the fuel tank if its been left part filled for that sort of time. How much fuel is in the car ? - if its quarter full then maybe ÂŁ30 of Shell V-Power superunleaded will help. Redex probably won't do any harm either, but if you bought it from a dealer then its up to them to sort it out, and not you revving the engine to pump fuel system cleaner around.
 
I do seem to recall early cars having to have a new fuel cap seal - but this was because it was causing the Check Engine light to trigger. - In any case yours should surely have had that done by now!

When you fill up use Shell V.Power - this has detergents that will help clean out any old varnish & muck that may have accumulated.

S13 is the fuel pump relay - its part number 996 615 101 00 if that helps.

I can't remember the fuse box of my old 986 - i think there was either an instruction book in there with the locations of the fuses and relays, or the inside of the cover has the details.
 
Hi just a thought I had a similar problem on one of my customers cars, that turned out to be a piece of rubbish in the air box blocking the air flow to the air-mass sensor, causing engine management confusion!
Also if there is any smoke from the exhaust you may have a blocked oil separator in the breather system, (not an easy job to change!)
