Help - nightmare returned!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help or shed any light on this problem.....

Two months ago I had a problem whereby my '95 993 started to misfire. Following this, the revs stared to wander around all over the place regardless of throttle position. You could feel it jump even when driving at speed. When at idle, it was severe to the point where it would pick up to 1500-2000 rpm then drop back.

Took it the the OPC and after faffing about for a few days they cleaned the ISV (didnt make any difference), so I took it back and eventually after more faffing they replaced the oxygen sensor. (they dont seem bothered about spending time on these cars/customers anymore, they obviously have enough on their plate servicing cars for easy money and carrying out warranty work). Anyway this *seemed* to fix it.

Yesterday, the dreaded problem came back.

Same symptoms, much heavier misfire this time, also a burning smell from the exhaust for a short time, then once hot the revs wander again. Exactly the same.

The only common factor I recall is that there were similar weather conditions both times - it was extremely wet. The cabin yesterday was full of condensation as it was around the time it happened two months ago.

In amongst the depression of this, I have started to think about the possibilities of the cause:-
Due to the condensation in the cabin, the DME has gone a bit haywire causing the severe misfire problems?
Coils/Leads/distributor belt problems?

(its booked in again on the 10th at the OPC but if I can find a more suitable independent, this may be the better option)......

Does anybody have any experience of this type of problem, or care to share experiences before I top myself?

Regards
Chris

Chris,

Don't waste your money in an OPC.

Where are you based as someone is sure to know a good indie near you.

William

Thanks for the support ..... I am based in Swansea at weekends and Nottingham during the week, so either region would not be a problem.

Let's get the new year off to a good start!

You say you're based in Nottingham - an hour or so will see you at Strasse in Leeds. They're a really helpful bunch of guys and really know their stuff when it comes to Porsche. I'd be very suprised if they can't help you.

Regards

Thanks Oliver,

I will give them a ring on Tuesday first thing. Just checking their website now. I have also found an independent called Zentrum in Notts.

Has anyone had experience of them?

Chris

They need to run thru the basics of coils, leads, dizzy, spark plugs first, before assuming the worst.....

Had a similar prob on my 964 Cup Car that was traced to a faulty spark plug but only after a secondary test with an oscilloscope -and for gawd's sake don't take it to an OPC......

Hi mate,

I had a similar problem especially in the wet found to be a dodgy HT lead they seem to crack on the tight bends around the engine bay now all replaced no problems. Can you park the car in a dry place and see if it plays about when dry my guess is that she will be fine.

Hope this helps

I had misfiring problems , change of dizzy caps/rotors and a new HT lead which had snapped has cured the problems. RPM at Knaresborough I would also recommend , Nick/Andy know there stuff.

Cheers
Chris

Melv, 964driver and chrisr,

Many thanks for your input. That really helps.

A problem shared etc.etc. .........

I will certainly heed your advice and steer clear of the OPC - I think they see pre 996 drivers as an inconvenience. The less variation in the type hardware they have to work on keeps the training investment costs down I bet.

I have had a full service in between the two occurences, which included spark plugs. So I guess its on to the other items you mentioned.

It definately has everything to do with the wet weather. Maybe the change of o2 sensor last time was not needed, the amount of time they had the car in would have allowed it to dry out thoroughly anyway.

No personal experience but i've heard Helen Goff , East Midlands RO speak highly of them.

Just to prove why I have never serviced a Porsche yet with an OPC, just been looking through the receipts provided with the purchase of 993 ( Praying that either I dont experience as much cost or the OPC has been having a field day judging by six months worth of bills ) in April 05 they claim to have replaced dizzy caps/rotors and new HT leads to solve a misfiring issue , well I saw said items when RPM replaced them just before Christmas and it doesnt take a genius to work out that they where not 8 months old and covered less than 2,000 miles , needless to say I woudnt touch that OPC with a barge pole . Those caps looked more like 10 years old.

Hi Chris

I think we have met.......County Hall, rear car park(?) - I was in my "other car", a blue van!! Anyway, we use Zentrum and they are a thoroughly helpful bunch and love a challenge. If you are in Nottingham during the week, get in touch and we can introduce you to the R8 crowd if you are interested.

Yes ... your right. It would be great to meet up -I am back in Notts tomorrow, I will give Zentrum a call straight away too.

Maurice,

Thanks for the info - the amount of condensation suggest there is a leak somewhere. I will get this checked too.

Chris
