Help - no spark

Car was stood for three days in air port car park, came to start it and it coughed a couple of times and then refused to start. Recovery man checked and there is no spark at plugs or HT lead to Ignition Transformer (coil) CDS unit is whining with ignition on so it seems to be getting power. Any ideas?

Judging by the lack of replies, seems this is not a common fault on the sc. Well, if any one has such a problem, get the coil tested. Had mine tested and confirmed kaput. Chap suggested a standard 12v coil would be more than adequate and gave me a ref number of one supplied by Intermotor. Bought it locally for £30 and fitted it last night. Started first kick and runs great.
They can also check and repair the CDS box if it plays up and these are pretty expensive to replace I am told.
Cheers

Don't you beleive it. It is just that there are more people on the Classic & Heritage forum ( the SC is a Heritage Group car) and thats where you found your answer.

Jeff,

Be careful with that 'standard' coil.

I've heard that the CDI units require a specific coil resistance. Might be worth checking this post from the pelican web site:

Apparently running the wrong coil can burn out the CDI unit!

Cheers,

Tim.

I don't know what prat suggested a standard coil is good enough to power a Porsche engine but you could cause some seriously expensive problems running anything other than the original (Bosch) unit or one of the equally expensive aftermarket options developed specifically for Porsche flat six engines.

OK-point taken-BOSCH unit should arrive today. Lesson learnt and hopefully no damage done.

That's a wise move Jeff, Porsche developed these coils with Bosch and they really are a reliable high performance unit. If you want a bigger spark there are a few quality after market units around but they are expensive and probably not worth the bother unless your engine is tuned.
