HELP on purchasing a Cayman S :)

Hi guys,

I’m new to the forum and new to Porsche’s. I’m from West Yorkshire, UK.

I was thinking of getting a Honda S2000 but now kind of looking at the Cayman S. I would like some advice and tips on:-

- Value? What are they work? Examples? Special/Limited Editions? Desirable most sought after colours?
- Which Shape/Cayman S to get? Gen 1 / Gen 2 ?
- What optional extras I should be looking for and what do they do?
- As well as this any common issues problems these cars have I should be looking for?
- Are the Engine belts chain or belt driven and how often do they need replacing?
- How often do these need servicing?

I have about £20k to spend. I love a proper driver’s cars and enjoy high spirited driving so I was thinking maybe the manual option would be the one to go for rather than PDK. Although PDK does probably have superfast gear changes? But manual would probably be more fun and I would have more control over the car?

The simplest answer I can give is that with your budget get a 2.9 gen 2 because you will only be able to get gen 1 if you want a 3.4S. A manual gearbox will help you get the most out of the smaller engine and you'll have more fun. If you go PDK you might soon think I wish I had found more money to buy the gen 2 3.4S to make more use of the PDK.

As Steve has said, you're most probably looking at the 2.9L if you want a Gen2 car, which I'd recommend over the Gen1. The basic spec is rather basic for the price - but fine - although most people add a few of the expensive options when purchasing.

Personally, I prefer the manual 'box but the PDK transmission is excellent. Try both if you can.

The flat-6 boxer engines have chain-driven camshafts which are maintenance free. Servicing is every 2-years on the Gen2 cars.

Don't forget that you're purchasing an expensive vehicle where it doesn't pay to skimp on tyres, parts and service, so be prepared for higher running costs than you would have for the Honda. Having said that, there are some very good and competent Porsche Independents who are much cheaper than the Official Porsche Centres.

Hi T, I've just been through a similar experience (slightly lower budget, spent £17.5K) after spending 2 mths looking at 1st Boxsters, then moved to Cayman S's (which I eventually bought). You've probably sourced a car now, but if not happy to chat over my experiences/observations
