Help please - faulty instruments

I am hoping that someone out there can suggest a way to fix a couple of annoying problems! Apologies for the long post however if I give full details I hope someone will recognise these issues.
I have a '98 C2 which has just clicked over 98,000 miles. I posted a few months ago when the temperature gauge started behaving erratically (needle slow to move, 'jumping', and moving beyond the maximum range). I had the sensor replaced however this did not cure the problem, and the needle is now stuck somewhere at the top of the fuel gauge. The fan has been tested and cuts in when it should, so I'm fairly certain it's a problem with the gauge itself. I removed the entire instrument housing to check the connections but there did not appear to be anything amiss, and that I'm afraid is the extent of my technical ability! On my last run out the rev counter started behaving badly, showing similar problems to the temp gauge. The needle actually moved virtually all of the way round at one point, stopping over the LCD display! It has now returned to normal but I fear that it won't be long before it also gives up the ghost.
I was going to drop the car in at my local indy (Specialist Cars in Malton) for a diagnostic check, however I have read that fault codes with the instruments are only generated in post-2002 cars?
I have seen a set of replacement clocks from a breakers for £150 but I don't want to spend this sort of money and find that I am faced with the same problem later on.
Any advice gratefully received! Thankyou.

I think you will have to get a diagnostic check done. The early clusters DO record fault codes, but a PST2 or PIWIS tester will also operate some of the gauges using the 'drive links' routine. I suspect that something within the cluster has failed.
