Help please - loud knocking noise, rear wheel area.

Hi guys,

Would any of you kind people be able to offer me some advice re this matter. I have always been very lucky when it comes to cars and never seem to get any problems but today the 944 started to make a loud knocking noise from the rear passenger wheel. It doesnt seem to be affected by road bumps (so probably not shock related) merely the speed im doing. Ie it sounds like a machine gun on a motorway but a clock ticking at slow speeds. I havent noticed any change to the handling, just the embarrassment of folks gawping (for the wrong reasons!!)

Any advice greatfully received as i would like to correct the matter myself rather than taking it to a garage. []

Regards

Neil.

(ps sorry if you have read this twice now but I posted it on tipec too!)

So its definitely rotational? If its that loud it should be fairly easy to spot if you can get it in the air and get under. Could be as simple as something catching as the wheel goes round. Could also potentially be a CV joint although I would expect you to have had a bit more warning. Check the condition of the CV boots. Does cornering make any difference? If so then an outer CV could be likely (these normally tick more than knock). Inner cv's often knock when they wear but this is normally fairly gradual.

Cornering does not seem to effect it, it seems purely speed related. I certainly got no 'notice'. It just started doing it today and it is quite loud. felt like a nob driving through town earlier. [&o]

Someone else has suggested it could be the handbrake shoe. I will try and get out for a look tommorrow providing the weather behaves itself. Cheers

When my handbrake spring broke off, I had a squealing if anything to be honest. But they're not too hard to take off or put back on. If they are anything like the S2 setup, it can be fiddly to get the washers back into the correct position (between the trailing arm and caliper (but you'll grab the hang of this quite quickly)), and you'll need a box of the correct height (bricks stacked up could do the same thing) in order to put the brake pipe under less stain as it's detached from the trailing arm.

I reckon it's either the CV joint, or broken shock absorber (search Tony's (944Turbo's) threads), or very unlikely a wheel bearing.

Unlikely, when they go it's certainly not a regular "clicking" but the tortured sound of mangled metal. If you do check them it's worth fitting new retaining springs as it's these that fail, especially after fiddling with them!

My 944S is doing exactly the same, it has been coming and going for the last few months (never when its been with my garage of course) but over the last couple of days its got really bad, which is handy as it's going to RPM for the fuel leak on Monday so I'll ask them to have a look. My guess is the CV too, but we'll see []

I've heard of the securing bolts coming loose on the CV joints, and either a backed-out bolt or one of the plates under the bolts flailing around loose, especially on the passenger side near the exhaust, could make a banging noise. (The plates are like two washers joined by a flat plate, there's one for each pair of bolts, so 3 per joint.). Let us know when you track it down. Neil!
