Hi, just wondering if someone can help with a problem that I've had for a while now. Car drives well with no so faults or signs that anything is wrong, other than every now and then I get this clicking noise which sounds like it's comming from the bottom of the steering wheel area/drivers footwell, but it's hard to be exact. The noise sounds like a computer or switch, processing or working something out, it's quite loud and obvious when it does it but theres no pattern to it, just comes and goes sometimes more requent than others. When driving nothing seems to effect it, speed, gears, lights, indicators, steering etc. It also does it while stationery, I've tried recording it but like all these sorts of problems it never happens when you want. I was hoping it might be something someone else has experienced and which i might be able to fix myself, although I don't even know whats wrong....

Many thanks, George

Clean or replace the door pin switches (same as Mk2 Golf), your hearing the relay that allows the electric windows to work when the doors are open (with the ignition off) clicking.

I agree with ALZ 1933. I think this is the same pin that tells the lights if the door is open. I had this for a while, the clicking was the relay for the interior lights clicking on and off. I took out the pin, cleaned it up with some emery paper and put copper grease on all the contact points and the clicking was gone.

If that doesn't work then it definitely sounds like a relay (of which there are plenty!) because of where you are hearing it from and the way you describe the sound. So, start the car and whip off the fuse box cover and you might be able to track it down to which relay it is, then at least you have a fighting chance of finding where the short is!

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Tom, I really wanted to have a go at it today but didn't get time, hopefully tomo, I'll let you know when I sort it. Thanks, George
