Help please

Try removing the electrical plug from one injector, if the engine runs ok on 3 cylinders it points to a faulty FPR.

Could be the same problem I had when trying to start my S2 in April having been laid up since October - stale petrol! Put some fresh fuel in and it's been fine ever since.

Hi all, suggestions needed, my S2 has been off the road for a while due to a faulty imobiliser, got that sorted out and car started and ran fine for 3 days then on trying again it ran really rough for 10 seconds then stopped - got it gong today but it sounds like its running on 2 or 3 cylinders and would only start and stay running on a wide open throttle setting, exhuast very rich smelling.

Any clues as to what might be wrong?

thanks for any help

Thanks guys, given me a few things to try, Shaun I will try this first as easy and car has had same petrol in it for about 1 year! my only doubt for this is the car started and ran fine for three days prior to deciding not to work correctly and its the same petrol!

Could be that it's not firing on all cylinders. How old are the spark plugs, HT leads and dizzy cap/rotor arm? (Sadly the last three items are pricey for an S2.) Oli.

I used to leave my car standing for fairly long periods and once had a similar issue. I tried changing the DME and didn't make any difference. It turned out a vacuum hose at the back of the engine had perished. Hope you get it sorted.

Dont I know it Oli - you wont remember but I had to rebuild the top end of my white car when the timing chain and tensioner failed, 2 brand new cams, a recon head from EMC, water pump and all the bits that go with that lot. Will get new fuel tomorrow and see what happens.

Ouch - no I don't remember it but that couldn't have been far off the cost of a decent second-hand engine, surely? A bit of a long shot, but there is something odd that occasionally happens to S2's when starting which manifests itself as a misfire. There have been a couple of threads about it within the last year or so, one of which was mine. Here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.asp?m=778974&mpage=1&key=starting&#779683 https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.asp?m=727042&mpage=1&key=%F2%B1%A0%82 Are you simply suffering a worse version of this? Oli.

Oh loads more than the cost of a decent secon-hand engine but lets not go there. Read the threads and most talk about hot starting, mine is from cold, not got it to run long enough since it happened to get it hot. I have a spare DME and tried that and made no difference.

Check the distributor cap terminals for pitting and corrosion wher the plug leads live, it cured my strnge starting and running problem after i had just about checked everything !!

I had a similar problem and it transpired it was the king lead arching on to the headlight mechanism intermitently.

Thanks for all replies, Changed plugs, earth strap on battery and having pumped 5L fuel out (has about 20 L in tank) put 10 litres High octane with octane booster added. started and runs fine. So as to the cause - take your pick, my car does run rich ( how do you control mixture? I think the car has previously been chipped) and I suspect as I had only been bringing it up to normal temp and letting idle for 20 mins or so it fouled the plugs and stale fuel didnt help.
