Hello,

I have around £14,500 to spend on a Boxster and am pretty sure I am going to go to a dealer for it for saftys sake - It's my first porsche so I want to make sure it is all OK. Has anyone got any advice on what I should look for in terms of warrentee/anything else. Thanks in advance!

Most important things are condition, service history ( have a good check through the service book). If its a dealer they will almost certainly have a HPI certificate or similar - ask to see it. Ask to see the registration document to check how many owners etc. As far as warranty goes, generally the longer the warranty, the better for you BUT check exactly what it covers and what the terms are. ie does it have to be serviced by them? Most warranties won't cover the very items that are likely to give you trouble initially, such as suspension bushes etc. Warranties are quite a good negotiation point as they are worth a lot to you but cost the dealer relatively little.
If you get time, you could note down the option codes that appear on the white paper label stuck on the inside of the front bonnet. When you get home, you check out what these mean via the internet and find out the exact spec of your car. There are plenty of Boxsters about, so take your time and get the EXACT car you want - you'll only regret it later if you don't.

Hi Paul,
Buy & digest Peter Morgan's book The Ultimate Buyers Giude, Porsch Boxster & Boxster S 1996 to 2005, ISBN 09549990 02 website www.pmmbooks.com or buy it from the club website.Peter even does surveys
Join the Club... lots of info on the forums etc.
Take your time, there are a lot of dogs out there but equally a lot of sound cars in your price range.
Good Luck

Free advice is rarely good, good advice is rarely free but having owned a number of Boxsters I have seen good bad and ugly. £14500 is a VERY dangerous price band and there is much rubbish talked about these cars.

Service history is about as much an indicator of condition as a recent MOT of roadworthyness.

The single most important consideration is condition. The best one I had was a cat D car that I bought for 80% of the trade price for an unrecorded car but was perfect in every way (I had seen photos of the pre accident). The urban myth that you can't sell a cat D was proven to be wrong when I was sick of the phone ringing when I eventually offered an excellent Porsche at a cheap price (telling everyone it was cat D of course) but had cost virtually nothing in 12 months of ownership.

My first Boxster was dealer supplied and the day I collected it, it had leaked power steering fluid on my drive as it had been over filled. They argued that coil pack failure after 15K was "wear and tear" and that the dent in the door that wasn't there in the morning the car was dropped off had been there when they sold it to me 2 weeks earlier.

Since then all my cars have been maintained by an indy.

My advice at this price range is keep away from dealers, look closely at any private sales and have it checked out by an indy.

Find a half decent Porsche specialist or a reputale sports car dealer near you. Don't dismiss private sales, especially cars which still have extended warranty on them (unlikely perhaps at your price point, but maybe ?). Read as many buyers guides as you can - a lot will be repeated but it confirms what goes wrong, whats costly and what to check.

Any purchase should eb checked over prior to purchase - find a Porsche specialist or inspectorate to do this for you.
