Help re: Boxster Purchase Decision

A colleague at work is considering upgrading to a Boxster, and wondered if I knew of anyone who could be recommended to do an inspection (he is in Worcester) - I don't, but hope this forum does !

He also has a couple of questions re: a replacement engine and the 2.5 engine option.

An extract from his e-mail is :-

Following on from our chat the other day, please could you provide me with a couple of numbers to get a 2.7 Boxster checked out.

Basically, the car has 64k on the clock BUT had a new engine 4,000 miles ago.

Everything was done by Evans Halshaw but I am rather cautious whether I should entertain a vehicle with a little 'non-standard' history.

My concern is how to keep up with the servicing etc.
A friend of mine said that there is a known engine fault on the Boxter & 993.
He also said stay clear of the 2.5.

Any help would be most appreciated.

A new engine, so long as supplied by porsche and not sourced from a scrappy etc shouldn't worry you any more than any other replacement part - and especially when the car has done 64,000 you can now imagine this car cruising up to the 150,000 mile barrier.

Inspection - it's worth the money to get a proper Pre-purschase inspection (PPI) from any Official Porsche Centre.

You don't have to steer clear of a 2.5 - there are a few cases of blown engines in very early models, just get it properly inspected.

I'm afraid that there is no inspection that will highlight an impending slipped cylinder liner, other than taking the engine apart.

The engines affected were manufactured in 1998.

JCB..

Can't be. There are no common faults to a 993 and a Boxster, this must be a reference to the 996/Boxster rear main you-know-what.

If you buy a used 2.5 with full OPC history and you are unlucky enough to suffer a slipped liner, (or indeed a RMS on a 2/7/3.2) you have got more than a chance of some goodwill. So, your message to your mate may well be that apart from anything else, the priority is to but with a full dealer history. Period.
