Help requested - stuck ignition switch

Ray Kinghorn

Hi - been having intermittent problems switching my 964 ignition on, often re-setting the immobiliser seems to have cleared it, but now the ignition switch is stuck in the 'off' position. Have tried WD40, no help. The car has a H&P immobilser with the separate key.

Thanks - Ray Kinghorn

Hi ray
welcome to the forums.
I have no specific experience with 911's but I am not sure why you think that there is any relationship between the ignition switch and the immobiliser circuit ?
One is mechanical and the other is electronic . Unless you have a combined immobilser and ignition switch like the Ford jobbies where the ignition key contains a microchip which is coded.
I would suggest that the ignition switch is faulty and needs replacing . Someone else is sure to be along shortly that will know exactly what to do. I wouldn't fiddle too much with the switch if the electrical loom is plugged into the back of the switch as there is a lot of current that goes to the switch from the battery that cannot be turned off. ie always live

Thanks Nick. Agree with your comments regarding the switch & immobiliser, just included the remarks as I have been managing to clear the problem like that (maybe coincidence). As you say, I'm hoping for confirmation from someone with experience of the issue before I go out and change the ignition switch.

Ray,

I agree - there is no relationship between the two. The ignition switch controls the steering lock - and vice versa. If the steering lock is jammed you will not be able to move the key. Similarly, if the lock barrel is jammed the same thing will happen. The immobilisor is an electronic disabling system only. Try pulling the steering wheel one way or the other while you try to turn the ignition key.

Welcome BTW - hopefully you got my earlier e-mail.

Regards

Dave
