"Help" Starting Problems

Hello everyone - thanks for looking at my subject..

I finally purchased a 2000 2.7 Boxster 7 months ago after being very envious at seeing you all driving round in yours, and what a car "I love it to pieces"...!!

Within the last month I've had a few problems when starting from cold in the
mornings.

* Firstly - the car will "just about start" it sounds like it's starting on two cylinders and after 10 seconds is fine, no other starting problems throughout the day.

* Secondly - the car will start ok but a minute later when I go to drive off will kangaroo a couple of times and then be ok after a rev for the rest of the day.

I took the car in last week to (Porsche Hatfield) for it's 3 year maintenance (17k) service. They said the problem was an air sensor and replaced it costing me £245 but the problem still intermittently exists.

The car goes back in to be looked at in 3 weeks time.

Has anyone had this problem or got any ideas!!

Thanks for your time - Andrew

Hi Andrew,

My 2.7 has started to kangaroo a bit after starting from cold. I have always used the lower grade of unleaded, then my local petrol station ran out and I had to use the higher grade. This cured the problem, and incidentally the car now runs sweeter, the acceleration seems noticibly better, it runs more smoothly and the consumption has improved. If you don't use it at the moment give it a try.

It does say use 98 in the Manual and on the filler flap...

The car will compensate (by retarding the ignition) if lower grade fuel is put in, but it is designed for the higher...

What happens in Italy where only 95 Ron is available I don't know. Maybe the car is built in a different variant (there are at least 5 variants for different local conditions)

Andrew, I've just had the air flow meter (Mass sensor) replaced on my car. I was a little disappointed at first because the car still tended to stutter afterwards.
The problem has cured itself after dosing the petrol tank with injection cleaner. Maybe the mass sensor problem causes the injectors to become blocked with carbon? I don't know but give it a try!

I,ve always used normal unleaded on ny 2000 2.7 (48,000 miles) with no problems at all. have just started putting in every 2 or 3 tankfulls a tankfull of Optimax as I was quite impressed with the tests autoexpess did a few months back.
