Ladies/Gents,

Been a while since I've posted due to a multitude of things requiring my time - hope you and your respective vehicles are all well?

Drove car yesterday no problems whatsoever. Left the car outside at my Girlfreinds house yesterday evening, got in it at 8am this morning to be presented with the following lights and warnings:

Apart from no doubt having to PSM and ABS the car feels exactly as it did yesterday.

Any feedback/advise?

The three most common causes are:

Brake light switch
ABS sensor
MAF sensor

Even if the brake lights are working it could still be the switch, as there are two sets of contacts inside.

You really need to get a diagnostic check done.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the info. I've just spoken to a contact of mine and heading over for a diagnostic this afternoon. I'll update what it was later.

Cheers - Jon

I had the same problem and, thankfully, it was just the brake light switch - one of the cheapest repairs I've ever had on a Porsche!

Mine came on last week and when the garage checked for a fault found it was the front n/s ABS sensor. I believe the PSM won't now kick in if required, so been driving gently till fixed?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Had it on the Diagnostic at SVP - Porsche prep specialists. Looks like MAF sensor. Quoted £200. Do you think it is worth getting mine and cleaning it before spending £200? Also the coffin arm on the front driver side is squeeking, £150 fitted, sound a good price?

They also think my Geo is out and although its been on a hunter they reckon it needs looking into so probably going to get the whole works sorted.

Cheers

Perhaps I am missing something but how on earth could the MAF affect PSM? Not familiar with the PSM system, sounds odd it would throw a code or stop functioning because of a generic running issue such as a MAF failure.

Certinaly it shouldn't have anything to do with the ABS??

The reason that it gives a PSM/ABS message is because the DME is sending implausible signals to the PSM module. The PSM "believes" the DME, so throws a wobbly. However, on a RoW 996, the DME is not programmed to throw a Check Engine light. (It will on a USA car).

Yes, wouldn't it be nice if it said "MAF Failure", "Brake Switch Failure" or "F/R ABS Sensor Failure". What would it do to the Porsche Workshops' business though?

Jon - the prices SVP have quoted seem reasonable to me. (Porsche price for the MAF is £495+VAT). Don't bother trying to clean the MAF. If it has done around 50,000 miles, then IMO it will be living on borrowed time anyway.

MAF Replaced - All lights deleted and not returning so confident it's fixed. Car pulling much smoother and stronger too so old MAF was knackered.

Coffin Arm replaces - no more squeeking.

Full GEO done too - Like a new car, lighter steering at low speed, more planted when driving under normal conditions. Wet today and had someone with me who doesn't like speed too much so will have to wait and see how it behaves on boost.

Appreciate the help and feedback received

Good to hear it all went well, and a shame you had the most expensive of the three likely faults.

What equipment has Dom at SVP got for doing alignment?

Richard - i expect nothing less that the most expensive fix when encountering problems!! Sods law...!!!

Dom and his team use string he tells me!! Swears by it and is critical of Hunter machines and the like. I trusted him and my car feels more planted than ever
