Help .... Water Pump I think !!!!!!

Hi guys ...... i need some help please !!!!

996 - 2wd Carrera 2000 (fried egg headlamps) - 3.4 - tiptronic, with A/C

i noticed a few days ago a couple of drips of water under the back of the car smack in the middle - it appeared to be dripping off the bottom pulley - but closer inspection looked as if it was above the bottom pulley coming from above.

The patch of water was about the size of your fist (round).

Today less than 3-4miles after noticing the drip and adding it to the ' must look at that mental list ' ....... a crunch, rattle and squeal come from the back end at approx 20mph ....... the alternator light came on and the P/S was lost

As i pulled up the car was steaming a little from under the rear hood.

I'm assuming that the water pump has gone / seized, or as is normal "¦"¦sheared, locked up and caused the drive belt to come off and water spew out in a following line of my direction "¦..on the floor !!!!

I'm not a 996 expert but i am a mechanic traded guy so im looking for some technical guidance on this !!!!

Questions that are immediately pooping into my head before i have chance to look at it tomorrow morning are

1) Do you think i am correct ? or is there something sinister I need to know !

2) I'll be doing it myself - so how easy is it to do, what's involved (briefly at this stage)

3) Cost guides of replacement pump assembly

Any other info appreciated, such as where cna i download a manual etc !!!

Many thanks guys ..... not had it long so a bit annoyed !!!!

Cheers
Dave

update

air box removed and a good look underneath reveals the water pump has collapsed and gone

I browsed this site last night and found a great link to a website which details the changing of the water pump

looks fairly straight forward ....... ill need a new belt obviously but any advice on the water pump fitting or where to get one from (best price etc ) appreciated ....

cheers
dave

A water pump from Porsche is £195.46+VAT (Part number 996.106.011.55). You could try Euro Car Parts, Design911 or Porscheshop.

You can download a (old) workshop manual from www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm . It is quite out of date, but is fine for a 3.4 car.

Gents

Thanks for the replies

Ive now removed the old pump etc and ill order a new one up tomorrow from one of the site you suggested

Ive looked at the sites and have seen OE and original fittment with about 70 quid difference in the price

in your mind would you go for the OE at approx £130 or the original one for about £200 ?

I downloaded the manuals from the Cannel site which are great many thanks

The link i found for the water pump site (which i forgot to add before) is - http://p-car.com/996/diy/waterpump/

you all probably know about this site i guess but its very good and his write up was spot on and helped me a lot

Ok - ill post an update when i get the new bits !!!!

cheers
dave
