Help with chirping noise please.

I've noticed a constant chirp coming from the engine on start-up, fairly loud and medium pitch. My first thoughts are a dry bearing or something similar but I'm not overly familiar with the engine as yet. Looking at the engine bay it's coming from the belt area but I can't pin it down any more than that.

Any thoughts as to what this might be please? Hopefully it's just a lubrication issue rather than something expensive.......[8|]

Thanks,

David.

Hi,

Do you get it at all when you change down?

I had something similar and it was the belts slipping

My first thoughts would also be the belts. Worth checking the tension and probably due for a change if they are the originals. An easy way to check is to spray the belts with WD40. If the noise stops then it confirms it is the belts. The WD40 will dry after a while and the noise will return.

Other possibilities are the switch that rests on the belt or the alternator bearings.

I don't believe so Pete, in fact I'm fairly certain it goes away when the engine is warm. My previous experience of squealing belts is that they tend to be high pitched, though of course the 993 belts may be different. I'll have another listen tonight and see if I can gather more info.

Cheers PP, I'll try a brief spray and see if it changes/stops the sound. If so I guess I need someone to check the tension or put on a new belt.

Well the WD40 kept it away for a for a while but the noise came back. Finally had the belt changed and all is quiet again! [:)]
