This is an interesting story about how I managed to acquire a beautiful 1973 RS Carrera replica for free!!!

She's actually a 1972 911e 2.4 (I think!)

My reason for writing is that having just visited Goodwood this weekend I spent time at the Porsche Owner's Club tent and decided to join ya all. I reckon this is the best place to get the help and advice I have been searching for for the last few years.
First, the story about how it came into my possession.
I used to work in a boat yard in Lymington, Hants commissioning new yachts. In my spare time I also restored and sold craft to boost my income.
I eventually left the yard but continued to sell on my projects until one day I managed a great deal on a boat, swapping it for a Mercedes and some cash. The Merc was a lovely motor so I instantly drove to the old boatyard to show off to my friends and ex colleagues.
Knowing I was always on the lookout for new projects and being impressed with my recent deal a good friend of mine pointed across the car park and said that might interest you... The 1973 RS Carrera replica.
Now, knowing absolutely nothing about old Porsches I liked the look of it but considered it to be' just an old Porsche' but the exciting part was that it had been sat there for nearly 2 years and was covered in abandoned car notices from the council!
Having called the council they explained that they had a procedure of contacting the owner several times and failing a response the car was either crushed or auctioned.
My immediate thought was that now the notifications had started the car would soon be removed by the owner... Time passed by!
I kept an eye on the car and to my amazement the car remained in the car park. As this was private property I decided to pop up to the Marina office and have a chat with the owner. I asked in a casual manner, "what's happening with that old Porsche over there?"
And then came the reply I'll never forget "Oh, that bloody thing, it's been a right pain and I wish someone would just take it away!!!"
"I know just the man", I replied.
Now technically, because this was private land and the car was "˜officially abandoned' having well exceed the 15 day limit, but I decided to give the owner a little more time. I contacted the council again to find when they were planning to remove the vehicle and waited.
On 27 December 2000 I met "˜The Man from the Council' at the car. Strangely, for a Council worker he was a really nice bloke and we had a long talk about the Porsche. I explained that the owner of the yard had given me permission to remove the abandoned vehicle and did the council have an objection? As it was a private car park he said he didn't care.
He also added that this kind of thing happens all the time. Lymington, being a boating area, has a lot of affluent visitors. They often come to the UK, buy a car, go touring and then just abandon them! He'd removed all kinds of nice cars.
Anyway, whatever the reason for the owner abandoning this 911 did not concern me (providing the tyres weren't stuffed with drugs and it was being watched by customs for someone to pick it up!!!). I loaded it onto the trailer and took it home.
I applied for the log book which duly arrived and in the meantime set about getting it running. I suspected that the engine was probably seized, after all, there must be some reason for not wanting it!
I took the ignition barrel to the locksmiths to get a new key and after replacing it in the car proceeded to turn it over. Amazingly it fired into life after just a few seconds and she roared.
I was now the new proud owner of this elegant old classic.
I have used her regularly since and tried to learn as much as I can about the car but there is a limit to what you glean from books and magazines, especially as I'm a hands on type. My reason for posting is that I need more help.
The car is in need of some tlc, I also recently spun it in the wet and smashed the rear 8" fuch alloy on the kerb "" it looks as though someone has done a lot of work at some stage but sitting around for several years hasn't help keep her in the pristine order she obviously once enjoyed. There are bodywork issues and the engine smokes.
Over the years I have been totally seduced by this car and after the excitement of Goodwood recently I decided to really push to get the car back in shape. I want to enjoy her on the road, take her to open days, track days and hopefully, having joined your club meet others who share my passion.
I eventually got out of boats and started several websites, one of which is the very popular Autoinfozone.com, which has appeared on motoring shows and in the press. It exposes "˜amazing motoring loopholes' and as the Porsche was acquired through a loophole I wanted to publish a photo diary of how things progress with her.
Ideally, I am looking for someone/company to help bring her back to tip-top condition and to help on issues such as whether I put in a new modern 3.2/3.3 engine or rebuild the old, maybe up it from 2.4 to 2.7? etc. etc.
I'm desperately seeking practical help, but would welcome any advice. I have a budget and the people to offer assistance will enjoy prime coverage and exposure at the Autoinfozone.com site in return for their input and sponsorship.
I hope you enjoy this story and I look forward to meeting other Porsche enthusiasts.
