Help with my 1973 RS Carrera replica discovered in a boatyard!

This is an interesting story about how I managed to acquire a beautiful 1973 RS Carrera replica for free!!!

See photo

She's actually a 1972 911e 2.4 (I think!)
Vin: 9112200973
Engine: 6221535

My reason for writing is that having just visited Goodwood this weekend I spent time at the Porsche Owner's Club tent and decided to join ya all. I reckon this is the best place to get the help and advice I have been searching for for the last few years.

First, the story about how it came into my possession.

I used to work in a boat yard in Lymington, Hants commissioning new yachts. In my spare time I also restored and sold craft to boost my income.

I eventually left the yard but continued to sell on my projects until one day I managed a great deal on a boat, swapping it for a Mercedes and some cash. The Merc was a lovely motor so I instantly drove to the old boatyard to show off to my friends and ex colleagues.

Knowing I was always on the lookout for new projects and being impressed with my recent deal a good friend of mine pointed across the car park and said that might interest you... The 1973 RS Carrera replica.

Now, knowing absolutely nothing about old Porsches I liked the look of it but considered it to be' just an old Porsche' but the exciting part was that it had been sat there for nearly 2 years and was covered in abandoned car notices from the council!

Having called the council they explained that they had a procedure of contacting the owner several times and failing a response the car was either crushed or auctioned.

My immediate thought was that now the notifications had started the car would soon be removed by the owner... Time passed by!

I kept an eye on the car and to my amazement the car remained in the car park. As this was private property I decided to pop up to the Marina office and have a chat with the owner. I asked in a casual manner, "what's happening with that old Porsche over there?"

And then came the reply I'll never forget "Oh, that bloody thing, it's been a right pain and I wish someone would just take it away!!!"

"I know just the man", I replied.

Now technically, because this was private land and the car was "˜officially abandoned' having well exceed the 15 day limit, but I decided to give the owner a little more time. I contacted the council again to find when they were planning to remove the vehicle and waited.

On 27 December 2000 I met "˜The Man from the Council' at the car. Strangely, for a Council worker he was a really nice bloke and we had a long talk about the Porsche. I explained that the owner of the yard had given me permission to remove the abandoned vehicle and did the council have an objection? As it was a private car park he said he didn't care.

He also added that this kind of thing happens all the time. Lymington, being a boating area, has a lot of affluent visitors. They often come to the UK, buy a car, go touring and then just abandon them! He'd removed all kinds of nice cars.

Anyway, whatever the reason for the owner abandoning this 911 did not concern me (providing the tyres weren't stuffed with drugs and it was being watched by customs for someone to pick it up!!!). I loaded it onto the trailer and took it home.

I applied for the log book which duly arrived and in the meantime set about getting it running. I suspected that the engine was probably seized, after all, there must be some reason for not wanting it!

I took the ignition barrel to the locksmiths to get a new key and after replacing it in the car proceeded to turn it over. Amazingly it fired into life after just a few seconds and she roared.

I was now the new proud owner of this elegant old classic.

I have used her regularly since and tried to learn as much as I can about the car but there is a limit to what you glean from books and magazines, especially as I'm a hands on type. My reason for posting is that I need more help.

The car is in need of some tlc, I also recently spun it in the wet and smashed the rear 8" fuch alloy on the kerb "" it looks as though someone has done a lot of work at some stage but sitting around for several years hasn't help keep her in the pristine order she obviously once enjoyed. There are bodywork issues and the engine smokes.

Over the years I have been totally seduced by this car and after the excitement of Goodwood recently I decided to really push to get the car back in shape. I want to enjoy her on the road, take her to open days, track days and hopefully, having joined your club meet others who share my passion.

I eventually got out of boats and started several websites, one of which is the very popular Autoinfozone.com, which has appeared on motoring shows and in the press. It exposes "˜amazing motoring loopholes' and as the Porsche was acquired through a loophole I wanted to publish a photo diary of how things progress with her.

Ideally, I am looking for someone/company to help bring her back to tip-top condition and to help on issues such as whether I put in a new modern 3.2/3.3 engine or rebuild the old, maybe up it from 2.4 to 2.7? etc. etc.

I'm desperately seeking practical help, but would welcome any advice. I have a budget and the people to offer assistance will enjoy prime coverage and exposure at the Autoinfozone.com site in return for their input and sponsorship.

I hope you enjoy this story and I look forward to meeting other Porsche enthusiasts.

picture looks good, and a nice little story.
the best company i would think is autofarm, (josh saddler)

keep us posted

Nice find !

VIN confirms that it's a '72 911E & engine number indicates that it's a '72 2.4 911E engine (well at least the crankcase is - it may have uprated barrels & pistons). Front wheels look to be Fuchs replicas but it's difficult to tell from the angle of the photo.

Any more photos ?

Thanks steve,

Will drop them a line - I'm chomping at the bit to get her done as I wanted to take part in the world record attempt at the festival. I have 2 other friends with Porsches who aren't members yet and I'd like to bring them too. I'd need to source a new rear wheel and ensure there is no damage to the axle as I gave the kerb a right clout when I spun her!!!

Wondering if anyone knows of somewhere that could look at this closer to Bournemouth. Get that fixed and a bit of spit and polish and she'll be fit to join ya all in the record.

PS. how do I get my profile to show I'm a member?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that - it really is a mystry why anyone would want to abandon something like this - we did think that the previous owner had got lost at sea or worse, got hitched with some ladyboy on an exotic island somewhere!

I have loads of photos and I'll put them up at the site - I'll try to get it done over the next 24 hours and will let you know

Ta.

Cheers,

Will contact

I hope to be at Brands and hopefully bring me motor!

I'll get myself orgnised - we have a long weekend in Portugal around then but I'll try to get that for the weekend b4 - how much notice do you need for the car as I have to get some work and a new wheel, but she goes fine so long as there's no major damage.

Where's the best (and reasonable) place for a new wheel?

Nick at www.early911.co.uk always seems to have wheels (Alex should have some as well) . . . BTW nothing to do with Porsche's is cheap.

I need to know about Brands in the next for days.

Phil

Thanks for replies all of you,

Have already contacted Nick - I suspect tat once I replace the wheel and give the axel a bashing she should be ok.

With the best intentions I will say yes to Brands as it's a while away and hpoefully give me time to get her running. The only way I'll be forced to let you down is if I get let down but hopefully with the support of the club that won't be an issue. I'll also have a word with my two friends with Porsches to see it they fancy boosting the world record numbers.

I can get you more concrete answers by very early next week or maybe tomorrow. Hate making promises I can't keep!

put more pix up here as promised http://www.autoinfozone.com/porschepix.htm

Just spoken to one friend and he'll bring his Boxter for the world record attempt should have another 911 also - will let you know.

It's just occoured to me that we can break two world records at the same time - the most Porsches on the track and the world's most expensive banger race!!!

Paul those wheels are replica Fuchs (cast as opposed to forged for the originals) - that's why it broke rather than bent. You might have a problem trying to match them though - are they 15" or 16" diameter ?

If they're 15" I have an original 8" Fuchs wheel available (relatively) cheap...

Fascinating story Paul. I hope you make it to Brands, would love to see such a 'lucky' find in the flesh.

I'd better be off to the local boatyard by the Grand Union canal in the morning [:D]

hi again, i cant remember how to get profile to show as member, but i think you have to email club office with membership number and that is it , it also lets you log into the members area as well.
im sure some one will reply to your request.
all the best

steve

Hi Paul, Steve, Andy.

First the wheels because without them she ain't going nowhere!

Andy, they're 15 x 8 - My mechanic said we have to be careful as they have a different depth but I can't see any markings - not sure if this is the case but if your wheel matches then great - how much?

If I can't match them then I guess I'm lookng for a pair.

Paul - I'll be at Brands one way or another and it may be worth a trip to the local boatyard, aparantly they're full of old Porsches.... we wish!!!

Steve, thanks and aparanty I do have to e-mail the club - will do when I get a second. I'm gonna play around with those thumbnails and see if I can get my car there too - don't like being left out!

To any company interested in the practicle help with the car photo publication/diary at Autoinfozone we have itv chasing us at the moment - not sure if we'll do it as they want our loopholes for free - bloody journilists!!! (Apoligies to the journilists in the club cause you're probably good ones, form one good journilist to another!) We are also getting tens of thousands of hits a week and at the top of major search engines for many keywords so it is an opportunity for some good publicity.

Paul,

Fascinating story - I keep looking for that elusive Lottery ticket to 'make my day' and live in hope. Well done with the new car.

I suggest that you tell the local police what you have done just in case there is a police interest or the car has been registered as lost or stolen on the Police National Computer. You really do not want to spend a lot of time, energy and money on the car to find another type of car with blue lights, men with blue diced caps and an irate owner outside your house one day, reclaiming the vehicle and leaving you with little or no redress or prospect of getting anything out of your work. This is not a damper on your enthusiasm, but a sensible suggestion to avoid future disappointment.

Hope all goes well and you have many happy hours and miles with the car.

.

No worries - I did all that and they weren't in the least bit interested - besides I found the car in 2000 so am quite relaxed about it plus the origional owner was contacted by the boatyard many times during it's stay in their car park, then the police and finally the council - then the DVLA write to the origional owner when you apply for the log book so he could have stopped it then. I have all the paperwork including the council official notices. Aparantly he lives around here (or did) so I'm sure I would have heard something by now if he wanted to collect the drugs hidden in the bodywork!

I also spoke to my solicitor who advises me as it was officially abandoned on private property I have a totally legitimate claim. If I hadn't taken it on that day it would have been nabbed by 'The man from the Council' and auctioned.

My attitude was why should the council have it?

You should have seen the faces on the lads from the yards as I rove out!

Every one knew about it for over a year and not one did anything about it - oh well , win some, lose some!

Win some, lose some?

Surely you just won, Royal Flush and took the jackpot. Well done, and getting legal advice as well just to make sure....

I won, the lads in the boatyard lost!

They'd looked at it every day for a year or two but no one had the gaul to take action. Little life lesson I suppose.

Just a quick update - thanks for all the help - got loads of e-mails and have eventually hooked up with Francis Tuthill - got to take the car up there to give it the once over and get some plans laid for the work.

Before I do I have to get it driveable - it turns out that the damage from the spin is giong to cost more than I thought so have put in a claim on the insurance. Got an engineer coming to assess the damage.

As this forum post drops away I will be posting the progress from now on at the site http://www.autoinfozone.com/porschepix.htm so please drop by occasionally to see how were getting on. I'll also pop back here occasionally to answer any posts.

Thanks again for all the help on this - achieved more in the last week than the last 5 years
